Ossie Ardiles wore the number 1 shirt at the 1982 World Cup because they numbered their squad alphabetically.
England did the same, except for the goalkeepers who had 1, 13 and 22. Also Kevin Keegan thought he far too important and insisted on wearing 7, even though alphabetically he would have worn 9.

The first time numbers were worn in an FA Cup Final was 1933. Everton wore 1-11 & Man City wore 12-22.
