  • More defensive woes

Against Swansea we conceded all 4 attempts they had on target. Today Hull scored 2 of their 3 on target efforts. I thought I'd see where we stood in terms of how many attempts it takes to score against us.

I couldn't find any tables showing how many shots on or off target we have faced over the course of the season, so I could only use an average of shots faced per game and go from there.

This season we have conceded a goal on average for every 7.2 shots faced. Only Birmingham City have a worse record, 0.0035 worse. At the other end of the spectrum, Millwall have the best record in the division, conceding every 12.7 shots.

We have, give or take one or two for rounding purposes, had 455 shots taken against us. That's the 11th best record in the division. Peterborough and Reading have faced over 600 shots. Luton and Blackburn have similar figures to ours.

I can only guess from here, but it would suggest to me that we have a habit of giving teams decent opportunities to score against us. It's a pity there are no on or off target stats to back this up. During the course of the season we've had a defence that has been relatively easy to breach.

Given the date of that, our current form of letting most attempts fly into our net hasn't, for obvious reasons, been counted.

I think it's concerning that teams don't need too many attempts in order to find the net.

The BBC website gives the stat for shots on or off target .I had a quick look and it looks like teams average 4 shots on target against us.

that's been the same story all season, we don't face a particularly high number of shots, but lots of them go in.

so either we are just unlucky, or we tend to present the opposition with big chances

Or teams are happy to bide their time against us as they reckon they'll get a good opportunity without having to rely on lots of pot shots from 25 yards.

I’ve not checked this, but the type of goals we concede would appear to be informative. For a team that scores a lot of set piece goals, it strikes me that we concede more of them than we should. More so earlier in the season, we were conceding from shots around the edge of the penalty area when the scorer wasn’t closed down quickly enough and there’ve also been a series of them where one pass through the middle has completely opened us up. Throw in a unhealthy number of goals conceded from individual errors as well and you have enough evidence to strongly suggest building a new central defence, especially, this summer would be a must even if there weren’t contracts expiring.
