What a rollercoaster few seasons they've had

    18/19 Promoted to the championship
19/20 Avoided relegation on the last day with an unlikely win
20/21 5th with 78 points and in the playoffs
21/22 Relegated and pretty terrible all season.

Seems remarkable a side can go from a relegation battle to playoffs and then relegated within 3 seasons.

They've had comfortably the youngest side in the division for most if not all of that time, and lost a couple of key players in the summer in Alex Mowatt and Daryl Dike. But goes to show the fine lines between success and failure at this level.

      It's a pretty rare phenomenon.

In 1989/90, Brighton finished 18th in Div 2. They lost a playoff final to Notts County the season after, then were relegated in 23rd place in 1991/92.

In 2004/05, Leeds finished 14th in the Championship after their relegation from the PL. They then made the playoffs in 2005/06 and were relegated in 2006/07.

Other sides that finished in the bottom half, made playoffs and were then relegated were:

      Swindon (League 1, 2008-11), Barnet (Div 3, 2000-03), Notts County (League 2, 2016-19), Plymouth (Div 2, 1992-95), Scarborough (Div 3, 1996-99) and Hereford (Div 3, 1994-97).

People will say that losing Ismael and Mowatt was the reason for their decline, but look what’s happened to them at West Brom - Barnsley didn’t look like a team set for the sort of season they’ve had when they played here on the opening day back in August and I can remember them playing QPR off the park for forty five minutes a fortnight later - it’s a strange one.
