The contractor certainly got their pound of flesh out of you on that job!

How did you build it. I think that might be my way forward,

YouTube is your friend! There should be lots of videos showing how to shutter, prepare the base, and mix the concrete for a simple step.

If it's a step, then fix a bit of batten on the face of the step, the riser bit, and drop it down to the thickness required. Do the same on the sides if the step has a fall off. Buy a bit of ply, 10mm and cut down strips at required thickness of concrete, and fix to face of batten. Silicone any gaps where the batten and ply meet as water will flow out onto the paving below. Just get on YouTube Mike, it's a piece of piss.

Either the original builders built the step using the same materials or the previous owners nicked a couple.

My builder has part done the job, putting down the brick base, but he's not come back to do the slab and he's stopped that line of work now.
can you nick one of the ones from the pavement, and then ring the council to come and replace it

it is to those who are that way inclined. I'm going to go and get some ply and some quick drying cement and have a go. It's only a depth of 50mm I need to fill.

Get some ready-mix concrete, not cement.

Mike, jewson stock 900x600 x50 mm concrete slabs. You would just have to get 150mm cut off it.

£9.50 each plus vat, Tyndall at jewson, 56 in stock. I've got a disc cutter if you want it cut down.

Re: Anyone work with or supply concrete slabs?

I used to make up custom shaped slabs off site, personally, if the slab is liftable with 2 people, imho its easier

Piece of board ( we used to keep the old melamine kitchen cupboard shelves to use ) timber around the edge the depth you want the slab

paint the inside of the board and timber edge ( so its nice a smooth ) you could just oil it

then pour the concrete into the mold , fill to brim, force into edges, tamp down with a piece of timber, tap the edges to get rid of any air bubbles

the face next to the board would be the top face

though you could smooth the top of the mold ( bring up the " fat " of the concrete ) and that could be the top, you could add colours or sparkle to create a bit of a effect that way

then wait for a week, then tap the mold sides off and slide of board, then lift into place

I've used butter to grease up the shuttering.
