Uhura RIP

Just found out that Nichelle Nichols passed away on July 30.
Haven't seen it reported anywhere until now.
She was the first black woman to have a leading role in a TV seriies, and took part in the first inter-racial on-screen kiss when Captain Kirk and Uhura kissed in an episode of Star Trek.
She had considered quitting the role, but was persuaded to stay by none other than Martin Luther King.

There were a lot of very moving obituaries a few days ago - most of them talking about her as an icon for social change more than as an actress.

I was never a Trekkie but I did see her character in the series have a large and very protruding earpiece, which seemed to be a serious health and safety concern when the Enterprise was being severely shaken when hurling at warp factor seven.

There were a lot of very moving obituaries a few days ago - most of them talking about her as an icon for social change more than as an actress.

Never seen her in anything else other Star Trek, but she seemed to embody its spirit in real life - think that only leaves Kirk, Sulu (who doesn't get on with William Shatner) and Chekov left out of the main members of the cast in the first series now.

I don't know if this is true, but apparently, no one ever said "beam me up Scottie" in any episode of Star Trek.

More than a local hero. He should be recognised as a national hero and game changer and have a statue in the same vein as Betty Campbell does here.
Isn't there an empty plinth where Edward Colston once stood?
