Which is all irrelevant to this thread.

We were competing with Newcastle in the Championship not all that long ago. Could the current situation be down them them making better choices than us, or maybe they just got lucky with their choice of billionaires?

They were in the championship but I'm not sure it was much competition.jist a much bigger club, bit of luck with their owners, there are a few other clubs of similar size they could have chosen.

Funnily enough the much hated Ashley keeping their books in order may we'll have helped.

I always think back to the Real Madrid game and wonder where all those fans come from, and where did they go to? We squandered the chance of being a big club many years again, through a combination of bad owners and a lack of ambition. We could have kicked on in 2013/14, but it wasn't meant to be.

Our best crowds for the time have always been when we've been in the top division or challenging for promotion to the top flight. Most clubs are the same, apart from those who have been top flight regulars. If we'd had decades in the top flight we've have grown a fanbase that was more loyal. That's how football fans are in general.

If we had gone up in 1970/71 this graph would look a lot different, especially with all the "sleeper" Real Madrid fans coming out of the closet. The beginning of the slump also coincides with the sale of a young John Toshack to Liverpool in 1970.

Every taxi driver in Cardiff, will tell you, “I haven’t been down the City, since they sold Toshack”

if you look at the clubs from similar sized cities with much bigger support than us they always have a prolonged period in the top flight - 20 years or so, which we have never managed, and also they don't have a prolonged period in the bottom 2 divisions, only the occasional trip there at the most.

if we ever managed such a long period in the top division I think it would have a much more enduring impact on our attendances than the 'fickle' nature we currently see, more fans will be "locked in".
will that ever happen though, no idea.
