And Mahrez was about half that. They delivered a title so sit somewhere higher than Gross I'd say.

Makes it harder to judge with inflation and how transfer fees have inflated in the last 30 years I think.

Yes, Mahrez above Gross I reckon. It could be argued that Leicester’s title win was down mostly to some brilliant, and cheap, signings - although I wouldn’t count Vardy for this thread because Leicester were in the Championship when they signed him.

Just widening the parameters slightly, Henrik Larsson to Celtic for £650,000 is one that always sticks in my mind.

He's looking really good so far this year. May be slightly unfair to him, but he strikes me as a footballing equivalent of a flat track bully in cricket. When Brighton play well as a team he is one of their better players. When they've had tough runs he has generally been amongst their worst players, found himself on the fringes of the team a few times.
