  • Boring, boring Preston

11 games played - 3 scored, 4 conceded, 6 0-0 draws. Exciting times to be a Preston fan!

I know you're all wondering if a team has ever gone through an entire season with a scoring record like this. The short answer is no. The long answer is nooooooo.

At present, Preston's stats read as follows: goals scored per game - 0.27, goals conceded per game - 0.36, total goals per game - 0.64 (rounded up)

Liverpool hold the distinction of the best ever defensive season in 1978/79, conceding a miserly 16 goals in 42 games at an average of 0.38. Next come Chelsea, who conceded only 15 in 38 games in 2004/05 at an average of 0.39. On only 6 occasions in the history of the football league has a side conceded less than 0.5 goals a game.

Sheffield Utd and Derby County hold the joint record for the worst season in front of goal. In 2021/22 and 2007/08 respectively, they managed to score only 20 goals at an average of 0.53. No side has ever scored less than a goal every 2 games. At present Preston are on to score 13 goals for the entire season.

Gillingham hold the record for the least number of goals in total average for an entire season. In 1995/96 they bored their way to promotion from Division 4 with a total of 69 goals scored and conceded combined at an average of 1.5 goals a game. The Jacks appear close to the top of this list (8th) for their 2009/10 season under Paulo Sousa, where their 6-fingered fans saw an average of 1.67 goals a game under Sousa's snooze fest.

For those still awake at this point, Derby County claim the record for most average goals scored and conceded in a season. In 1890/91 they saw 128 goals scored and conceded in 22 games at an average of 5.82 goals a game. The vast majority of the high averages occurred in the 19th century and just before TOBW's date of birth. We haven't seen a combined average of 4 or more this millennium.

So to summarise, it would be a major surprise if Preston kept up this lack of goals for an entire season. To score and concede as few as they are doing is quite extraordinary.

Fascinating stuff Eric - who was the current City player who was part of that Gillingham side which “bored its way to promotion”?

He might have been there then, but this is a current City player - well, kind of.

After Googling I see Leo FW and Richard Carpenter in the squad that season for Gillingham. And a player called Mark Harris!!
