Any tips. I've decided to go there next week to watch the first two Wales games and the opening week of the WC.

Beautiful place. Went there once,to Palermo, Syracuse and also went up Mount Etna ,as far as we could. Great food, great people, plenty to look at. You are definitely making the right decision. Love to go back there, if only for the scenic areas.Originally posted by AfricanBluebird View PostFunny enough the new season of the white lotus is set in Sicily, and it looks absolutely amazing

Re: Anyone been to Sicily?
We went for a week a few years ago. Three nights in Syracuse and four nights near Ragusa, ie Montalbano country.Originally posted by Michael Morris View PostAny tips. I've decided to go there next week to watch the first two Wales games and the opening week of the WC.
Syracuse is great - fairly small to walk around and loads of Greek and Roman ruins. Also a very interesting Archimedes museum.
The area near Ragusa is very impressive. We had a nice day out visiting various towns where Montalbano was filmed - including seeing his beachfront house in Punta Secca and going into his office in Scicli.

We stayed in Taormina, which is a lovely, very hilly town with lots to see. We did day trips from there to Etna and by train to Syracuse (which, as suggested above, is a 'must').Originally posted by Michael Morris View PostAny tips. Be interesting to see who the locals are supporting!.

Re: Anyone been to Sicily?
I went there 4 years ago. Only stayed around the port area (Palermo) but found the place to be filthy having to wade through the rubbish in the street. I followed a female policewoman while walking into the town and was amazed to see her light up a fag and literally throw away the cigarette packaging into the street. I'm sure other parts of the island are very nice but I wasn't impressed.

Re: Anyone been to Sicily?
Worth bearing in mind that Sicily is bigger than Wales so depending upon where you are flying into you will probably only get to see bits of the island.
We stayed between Catania and Syracuse. With a car we were able to do Syracuse, Etna, Taormina and the lovely medieval town of Nota pretty easily. We had a longer drive to the Greek/Roman ruins of Agrigento in a day which is well worth a visit. The roads are mostly good though there is quite a bit of tail gate driving to contend with.
Did not make it to Palermo and the north of the island which was pretty much out of reach for a day trip from our location. But from there you can get up into the hills to Corleone, if The Godfather stuff is of interest.
As Vindec says be prepared to see more rubbish and fly tipping than you are used to. Think there is still a Mafia influence around rubbish collection. There is a lovely Commonwealth War Cemetery near Catania Airport but the approach road was littered with fly tips.
There are some very decent local lagers brewed on the island. Messina and Messina Crystal are both good as of course are the wines.
You should have a great time.

Not much to add.
We stayed in Taormina for about 10 days a good few years back and did trips around the east of the island - including Etna.
My main memory is of great little beachside tavernas with young white chilled wine and fish - and very friendly locals.

Re: Anyone been to Sicily?
Went to Taormina today. Breathtaking.
We are actually staying 15 mins from Taormina, on the coast below the town.
While up there today I went for a beer in the hotel where they filmed The White Lotus. Very nice hotel. Actually, outstanding hotel. Costly but very plush.
Parts of the coastal area looks a half built / half knocked down and could easily be war torn buildings. But there is a quaintness and a community where it just works without all the shiny bells and whistles.
Some pics on my FB page (if it’s visible)
