  • WWF Wrestling (WWWF/WWE)

Were any of you into your wrestling back in the day? I was utterly hooked in my teens until around 1992. We didn't have Sky (my dad wouldn't have a dish on the house) so I used to have my mates tape the WWF for me. But I was also into WCW and a bit of a geek who poured over Pro Wrestling Illustrated magazine. I collected all of the Wrestlemania VHS tapes and was able to acquire old videos of NWA Starrcade etc. Anyway, I've been reading Roddy Piper's biography and it is utterly fascinating. I've not been able to put it down. I can absolutely recommend it if you liked your wrestling in the golden era of WWF and prior.

I used to work with the brother of John Hindley, aka Johnny Smith, aka The Manxman. He was billed as the brother of Dave Boy and was the tag partner of the Dynamite Kid. They all trained together in Port Erin under Ted Betley. The Isle of Man gave 3 pro wrestlers their start.

John’s brother Mark was also useful but chose Rugby instead. I’ve never seen a live WWE bout but I’ve seen all of the above train, and by feck did they train, both in the ring and on the weights

I loved Dynamite Kid and Davey Boy Smith as a tag team in WWF. As far as I know they were real life cousins. In fact it says so in Roddy Piper's book. I'd love to know where I can watch the original Wrestlemania shows now. I can't find them after a quick search on Sky and Netflix.

Used to love it as a kid, we didn’t have sky or internet back then. My dad would take me to the local video store to rent WWF wrestling videos, I think older ones started at £1 and ranged to about £3 for 24 hours (and don’t forget to rewind it or you had to pay an extra days rental). It didn’t make any difference to me they weren’t the latest one, some royal rumbles I’d hire twice. I didn’t know or care if it was real back then. Also had all the figures haha.

Yes, Davey & Tom were cousins but Johnny Smith (Hindley) was billed as as Davey Boys brother which he wasn’t, he may have been a 2nd cousin or similar.

Poor Davey was just 39 when he died. He married the daughter of Stu Hart, and sister of Owen and Bret Hart who are both wrestlers sadly gone. Along with other siblings. The Hart family are wrestling royalty and so many died so young. It's sad too that Dynamite Kid also left us at a relatively young age. Wrestling is a mean old industry and the nonsense about it being fake is just that. It was brutal.

Have you watched 30 from 30 the Ric Flair documentary, sums it all up. Never a fan but how he is still alive is beyond comprehension.

I've not no but will look for it. Cheers. I hated Flair when I was WWF and stopped watching before he finally lived across. But I know he was a big time mate of Roddy Piper's so I've warmed to him. I onmgbremember the wrestler I saw as a kid, not the man behind the wrestler. Many have him as the greatest. It's hard to argue really.

Are you aware of the WWE network? It’s a subscription service like Netflix for wrestling. App is available on most streaming devices and phones/tablets.
It has all the modern stuff but also every thing that was broadcast from the past is on there too.

I was into it as a kid in the late 90s Attitude Era.
During the lockdowns me and my boys (8 and 11 y/o) worked our way through every episode of Raw, Smackdown and every PPV, in order, from around November 1998 to May 2001.
It was a blast. We made a big deal every time we got to a PPV, got snacks in and I’d have a few beers.

I was only able to watch bits and bobs back in the day so it was nice to see it all properly, there was loads I’d forgotten so it was genuinely exciting.

used to love WWF, Hulk hogan ( I went to his bar in clearwater, I bet Goats has aswell :hehe: ) Ultimate warrior and Ric Flair, Randy Savage, hacksaw Jim Duggan

Ive met Goldberg when in Las Vegas, while eating a burger, a likeable bloke, me and the mrs had just got married the day before and he congratulated us

Also was a big fan of NWA and WCW, Mainly for Sting

it was harmless entertainment, I enjoyed it, We were the 1st to have a BSB ( sky ) dish in the street, in Barry they were rare as hell, somehow I managed to talk my mum into getting it ( It was also my birthday gift ), cost £400, in hindsight I know 100% the could have never afforded it, she must have made some serious cut-backs to afford it

I used to Video the shows and pass it around every week

Genuinely thank you for taking the time to reply, but I'm really wanting 80s/90s as this was my era. I'm amazed how one book has evoked so much excitement about revisiting some 30 years ago.

You should subscribe to the wwe network. Its like netflix but for wrestling. It has a huge catalogue of wrestling shows from the 80s and 90s on it, not just wwe but other companies as well.

What about even further back? Saturday afternoon with Kent Walton. The wrestlers in those days, due to it being on one of the only channels we had, were as much household names as footballers of the day. Billy Two Rivers, Mick McManus, Jackie Pallo, Adrian Street, Kendo Nagasaki, Steve Logan etc. All seemed to taking place at venues such as The Methodist Hall, Batley with the obligatory elderly woman clattering them over the head with her handbag if one of their heads came through the ropes.

Is that in reply to my WWE network post?

Because my point was they have everything on there as far as I’m aware, including the era you are talking about.
