  • Another club scoring record up for grabs

Some of you will remember the 1981/82 relegation season. I was 3 when it started so apologies that it isn't still fresh in my mind, I had more important things to do, like potty training etc.

Graham Williams took over the reigns as manager with City in lower midtable. Williams was in charge for a mere 13 league games, where his side scored a feeble 7 goals. Len Ashurst took over and, survival was threatened briefly before relegation became the reality.

In amongst the chaos was a run of 9 games where the club only scored 2 goals, for the only time in the club's history - until today. Never before have we scored 2 goals in 10 games.

Quite bizarrely in that 81/82 season, we couldn't score for toffee for ages, then we manage to beat Cambridge 5-4 at home with a hat-trick from Gary Stevens. I wonder if fans, back then, couldn't believe what they were watching. Perhaps we're saving that for the Bristol City game?

Pretty sure that Cambridge game was played on a Saturday morning because of a clash with the rugby and one of Basil's goals in his hat-trick went in off his arse.

Eric, what's the club record run without a win again? Fifteen isn't it?

I don’t think Gary Stephens gets enough credit for his time here. Maybe its because he came after Alston & Evans, and certainly wasn’t easy on the eye, and even I can recall more than the odd calamity from him.

However, he did score goals, maybe 1 in 3 or 1 in 4, maybe Eric the Halfbee knows… and if I recall that was in a team struggling just like now. One thing for certain, 1 in 4 is better than we currently have today.

I can answer that for you.

Gary Stevens scored 44 goals in 138 (+12) league appearances for City. Not bad for a very cheap buy from Evesham United.

In his seasons at City, the team were in the old Second Division and finished 9th (1978/79), 15th (1979/80), 19th (1980/81) and 20th (relegated in 1981/82).

Just had a look at the record books and that game against Cambridge in March 1982 was watched by a crowd of 3,239, which at that stage was City's lowest post-War attendance for a league game. Maybe if hardly anybody bothers to turn up next week, the team will net a few goals.

Yeah, that was the one that stands out the most. The one big chance of the game after a flowing 3 pass move, on a pitch that looked like it was modelled on the Somme on Christmas day.
                      “Go on, yes”
                      “Yes, go on!”
                      “Yes, yes, yes!”
                      “Yes… Yes!… YES!”
                      “Shooooot!….”
                      “….”
                      “Uugghh”
                      “….”
                      “Oh!!!! Stephens!”

Ah, not a bad guess by me then.

I didn’t know he was bought from Evesham.

Before the M50 (or M5) was built, my parents used to drive through Evesham on the way to visit my sister, who lived in Leicester at the time. On the way back we would always stop of in one of those pick your own fruit places.

Maybe if the Motorways hadn’t been built, we might still be able to scout out some cheap goal-scorers, and I might still be getting some Victoria Plumbs to the bargain.

Stevens was bought for the princely sum of £3,000. He was thrown straight into the side and his first start was in the infamous 7-1 defeat at Luton. He made his home debut in the next game and scored against Blackburn in a 2-0 victory.

I can remember Phil Dwyer telling me about that Luton game. He said he went into this local in Wenvoe on the Sunday lunchtime and the landlord told him he could forget it, he was banned for a week.
