  • Managerial changes and survival

I've had a look at the last 10 seasons in the Championship to see how many clubs survived in the division after being in the bottom 3 when changing their manager from January onwards.

Only twice has it happened. In March 2014, Charlton sacked Chris Powell with the side at the bottom of the table. Jose Riga saw the side finish 18th, though it should also be mentioned that Charlton had 3 games in hand when Riga was appointed.

In Feb 2016 Neil Warnock took over a Rotherham side placed 22nd. They finished 21st with the bottom 3 sides all having a low number of points. It's interesting to note that Warnock only managed 1 point from his first 3 games before winning 6 of 8.

Apart from those two occurrances, changing managers for teams in the bottom 3 after January has rarely resulted in safety.

I think that, if you're in the bottom 3 in the second half of the season, you're there because you're not good enough. New manager bounces tend not to happen that much to teams already in the mire.

In both cases where a side did stay up, it wasn't as if those sides were miles adrift and were saved with an extraordinary run of form.

For me, relegation is between us and the bottom 3. The sides below us are crap, roughly as crap as we are.

We have been wedged in down the bottom 4 or 5 for a long time now

We deserve to be there because of poor club decisions , poor tactics by managers and sub standard players

No win in 14 is fecking pathetic

It's incredible that we are not cut adrift but we soon could be as we just don't look like winning games

So far sabri has shown nothing to suggest this team is going to benefit from a new manager

It's like a ship holed below the waterline slowly sinking

That's my point. Teams down the bottom often don't benefit from a new manager, especially this close to the end of the season. Most teams who panic and bring in someone new end up being relegated anyway.

To be fair we had to roll the dice as Hudson just wasn't getting anywhere

Our only hope is this new striker , Wickham and a bit more energy in the team instilled by sabri might get us enough points

It's unlikely but there was no way Hudson was keeping us up

If we do go down then if there are signs of improvement from now until the end of the season the manager should be given a decent chance next season

Reading and QPR could drop right in too, both in bad form.

Reading , Birmingham if we beat them will start worrying

But I think it's Stoke down really

Agreed, the teams above should be worried, we will all play each other over the next few months, today and Friday are so important!
