John Bercow defects to Labour.
Can't see Conservative Central Office losing too much sleep over this really.

It’s interesting that a traditional Tory feels more comfortable with a party under Starmer than Johnson.
Shows how far both parties have moved to the ‘right’?
He’s not the only Conservative who has expressed their distrust of Johnson. Dominic Grieve give him pelters in the week about his dishonesty.

just like Labour is a broad church, so is conservatism. Even traditionally, centrist Labour and centrist Tories weren't that far apart. It does amaze me that such people don't automatically align with the Lib Dems.

John Bercow is very meme popular in a positive sense.. If we're doing populism now, which seems to be the case, he'd be a hit.

Re: John Bercow defects to Labour.
Bercow was never a 'traditional ' tory. Labour and conservatives normally take turn about for speaker but when he stood for the post the Conservative party didn't want him, and he was only elected because the labour MPs voted for him.
As soon as he became speaker he became and independent having to resign from his original party and as is tradition, whilst he was speaker no one stood against him in any election.
He actually became a labour MP a week or so ago. Let's see how he does in the next election he stands in.

Dominic Grieve would be a credit to any party.
Bercow on the other hand.......

Re: John Bercow defects to Labour.
All this proves is that Bercow was, after all, always trying to deliberately block Brexit and the will of the people (as was Dominic Grieve). The words two faced and hypocritical come to mind. Labour are welcome to him.

If only there was a forum for this politics stuff.

Bercow was a very right wing tory when he was younger.
He has made a long political journey.
He did a lot of good things as speaker but in the end I think the power went to his head.
I think Hoyle is a much better speaker

Re: John Bercow defects to Labour.
The Tories defected to UKIP a long time ago so don’t blame him.

"Never a traditional Tory" is a statement may who know his political past would disagree with I think.

He isn’t an MP yet. He’s just joined the Labour Party

He won't be standing for election either, he's merely just joined the party.
Also, when he was elected speaker, he got 322 votes (June 22nd 2009). He was unanimously elected speaker in 2017.

Re: John Bercow defects to Labour.
If I was Labour i wouldn't have let him join and fecked him off just like Wimbledon tennis club did which he is still seething over.
He's a pompous little twat and comes across like the host of the good ole day's self righteous to the core.

Re: John Bercow defects to Labour.
Well done Bercow.
Obviously couldnt stomach the bufoon and co. any longer.

Re: John Bercow defects to Labour.
I wish everyone would defect to the democratic alliance party or something
Labour has had it and if it formed a new party in England with the flower power lot , the liberals and moderate tories there might be a chance of giving it to the conservatives right up the back passage
As it stands this country is a one party state
Of public school boys

So apart from the fact that Labour and Conservatives don't take turns at being speaker, the voting records on electing a Speaker are unproven, that his seat was regularly contested by other parties whilst he was Speaker and he is not a Labour MP I couldn't agree more!

Voted for by a wide cross section of society, including millions of working class people.

Yep some people appear to be happy and see success as they have more food banks.
Starmer needs to wise up as people voting for the worst PM and front bench in history is staggering.
At least Wales saw sense.

Not that many , the tory party is not the all encompassing church people like you think it is
Mostly daft little englanders and brexit types
Don't blame me when it all goes crackers
If the opposition unites the tories will get blown out of the water , this country is crying out for a moderate alternative to the tories who will soon shit on those that voted them in . Its what they do
The question is , will it the opposition parties in England unite ?
Its the only way realistically now the Scottish nationalists have taken a shed load of labour seats
I got pissed off with labour after a few years of Blair, his meddling in Iraq was a no no and the emergence from the other side of momentum and the likes of Diane Abbott .....someone put her to sleep please ....still hanging around means I am convinced now is the watershed time in British politics .
Accept that the labour and Liberal parties are dead , attract moderate , left leaning tories like Sarah Wollaston , who is now without a party and get on with an alternative
Boris , Gove , Patel , Hancock and the rest are right wing libertarian tosspots , they are a corrupt bunch of liars and any decent opposition would sort them out
But we don't have one and until we do they can do what they like
Starmer isn't the problem , his party in England and Scotland is the problem
-
Re: John Bercow defects to Labour.
There should be enough common ground between Labour, the LibDems and the Greens in England to form a strong alliance.
Defeating the Tories should be a priority.
Democracy is at risk as the Tories strip away constituencies, transparency, independence from regulating bodies, accountability and voting rights (watch this space).. in order to remain in power and grift for a generation for themselves and their elitist chums.
So individual party mandates should all come second to defeating the Tories

you always use the word libertarian as if it is some kind of crime. does that mean you believe in the nanny state, intervention in every aspect of peoples lives and control of the masses?

I always find it ironic that a libertarian has restricted our freedom and choice of working and living in the 27 closest countries to the UK.
It's hilarious really.
