Dunno what it's like in Cardiff, but we've got the first rainy morning in weeks up here to greet the new cricket season. Glamorgan start their four day game programme at home to Leicestershire today and the game will be streamed on You Tube as usual.
I watched two podcasts previewing Div 1 and 2 of the County Championship this week and Glamorgan did not even merit a mention in either of them, while the Guardian tipped us to finish seventh out of eight in their forecast for Div 2. I've no expectation of promotion or anything like that this year, I just hope for some pitches which provide an equal balance between bat and ball, rather than the boring run fests which have become the norm since games started being streamed - I'm not holding my breath mind.
Having seen the scores in the friendly against Cardiff UCCE , where the university scored 400 plus as did Glamorgan, then it suggests the same sort of tracks as seen in recent seasons.
It was a first for me last Sunday though. I watched the afternoon session down at Sophia, which is the first time I’ve ever watched a match( in the UK) in March. It felt like the middle of June though. It’s the most I’ve enjoyed watching sport since before this dire football season started!
I see Fernando is in the squad for today's game. I was impressed by him against England last year, so you'd think he'd add something to the bowling, but it looks like we'll be over reliant on Van Der Gugten once again - I always look forward to a new cricket season, but it looks to me like this will be another season where we'll struggle to bowl sides out twice in Championship cricket.
ul hasan didnt last long
The middle order looks really strong again, on paper at least. Could certainly do with another quick bowler or 2. I don't think Harris and Timmy are going to be the most robust injury wise as they got on in years.
162-7.
Whilst the middle order looks settled and relatively strong, the failure to recruit an opener batsman will probably mean they're exposed to the new ball far too often.
Bit of a recovery. Good innings by cooke. Got a feeling Leicester will put up a big score . Don't seem to be many demons in the pitch. Hopefully I'm wrong.
is Marnus Labuschagne back this season
Leicestershire an untroubled 99-1, dunno how the ice hockey are doing, so apologies for this if I’m not being fair to them, but why are all the professional sports sides based in Cardiff so bad?
Im expecting Cardiff rugby to beat Connacht tonight and get into the quarters, then do ospreys and Munster to finish top 8 in the URC. Mind you, we could quite easily lose them all and end up having had a porridge season.
166/3 is slightly less messy than I was expecting to see at lunch. Still feels like it's going to need a big second innings and play for the draw though
The city failed to score in a must win game and remain in bottom 3. Cardiff lost to Connaught for the 3rd time this season and are out of Europe. The devils lost in overtime and glammy getting thumped all around Cardiff by Leicestershires no.10 batter. Another great weekend!
I felt the same about the uni game. Glammy top 5 need a big day today - assuming they can ever bowl leics out - otherwise this could be a big, humiliating defeat to start the season against one of the weaker, although admittedly improving, counties over the last few seasons. Depressing!
If our bowlers are feeling down, at least they can take heart they're not playing for Worcestershire. Reduced Somerset to 39/3 and 140/4. Unfortunately for them the next wicket fell with over 500 on the board. Tom Banton currently not out on 357
Glammy 19/3.
Still 179 behind.
Innings defeat to start the season?
Have I missed the ECB announcement about teams playing on different pitches?
Can't be the same surface that looked so flat when Leicester were batting
Agree about the openers. I think there's potential in Byron, but would be nice to see a bit of experience alongside him. I don't think ul-hasan is going to cut it with bat or ball. He looks like someone who could average about 15 with the bat and 75 with the ball to me. Hopefully he proves me wrong
well this is going well today might be over by tea:frown:
Far from it, we scored 600plus for 4 I think it was, at Lords with Northeast getting 300 plus - from memory, Middlesex then got a first innings lead!
This game is getting embarrassing now, but it shouldn’t be too surprising given the lack of Welsh youngsters coming through, the low key recruitment in thewinter and the shambles regarding the coaching situation.
Great effort from Carlson so far. Shame nobody has really stuck with him. Hopefully Gorvin and Bashir can hang around for a bit.
Definitely good to see a bit of fight at the end. Shows there must be a bit of character. I've got to be honest, I'd forgotten about Gorvin. But if I remember rightly he did quite well end of last year. 4/51 with the ball and closing in on a 50 with the bat. Good individual performance
so in Glamorgan 2nd innings 8 players didn't get into double figures. wtf!
Did Ben Kellaway get injured bowling the final over? He only bowled 2 deliveries (well 4 if you include no balls) before Sam Northeast finished the over.
Pathetic performance - credit to Carlson and Gorvin for avoiding the innings defeat Glamorgan deserved, but as for the rest
