If CCFC were without a win as Wednesday were then the crowds for the Swansea and Bristol City games would have been a lot lower and we would have the ridiculous situation of a crowd of 16000 being announced and there being barely 14000 in the ground

I was very happy with the Swansea and Bristol attendances but if were were struggling and without a win like Wednesday we simply wouldn't get the crowds
It's always been our problem and it always will be . Our loyal fans are great . The reality is there just isn't enough of them .

Even non league are getting record attendances but I guess that’s helped by a few fairly big former league clubs who are now playing outside of the league structure.
On this day in 1981
Arsenal 1 Coventry 0 att 23100
Sunderland averaged about 20,000 that season….

Norwich maybe, with their premiership seasons. But Ipswich last 20 years are nowhere near us in achievement Eric. They have not played in top flight and we reached two major domestic cup finals to their none.

Didn’t used to be so huge at Roker park though, quite average crowds? Why so big now? Would they get 60/70,000 if they could? I doubt it…the place isn’t even very big. reckon they just have very loyal support right now

I would imagine they were relatively big at the old Roker.

Population of the city of Sunderland is 277,000
Population of the city of Newcastle is 300,000
Both smaller than Cardiff but not much between the two of them.

You're the one who reckons we'd have lower crowds despite higher season ticket sales. If my head needs a wobble, god knows what yours needs.
If you recall, we lost our opening league game at home and were utter gash against the worst team in the division. Yet we still had over 21k for a midweek game a few days after the jacks and over 20k for the visit of Rotherham.
If you still seriously think we'd have lost 6-7k of those fans you're utterly deluded.
In fact, while we're at it, there's little point discussing our attendances with you. Every time someone does, you come out with the old yarn of thousands of City fans deserting the club at the first sign of regardless of what evidence is thrown at you. Give it a rest. You're wrong again, you'll keep being wrong and it's getting tedious showing you up time and again.

They were also one of the more successful clubs in the late 70s and early 80s, more successful than we've ever been. Families keep supporting the club. They never lost a generation while bobbing about in the bottom division. We're still recovering from that.

You are not showing anyone up
We are not a well supported club and never have been
We are able to draw big gates but not regularly enough
Sheffield Wednesday despite a shocking start to the season had around 25 thousand home fans through the turnstiles when they got their first win of the season a few days ago
It was nearly November

How many times do you want to use this excuse ?
It's lame

Re: Championship attendances this weekend
Sunderland have the 12th best average attendance for the country in their history. However their pre first world war averages really drag the average down as they got under 15000 regularly in the formative years
We're ranked 32 but we didn't have any pre first world war attendances. Two seasons in the 80/early 90 we averaged under 3000

All cities surrounding areas add to the populations but doesn’t alter the actual city’s population. Sunderland has Washington, Durham, South Shields etc on its doorstep, making their catchment area large but doesn’t alter the actual city’s population.
By the same token our area, if you include Barry, Penarth, Pontypridd etc etc make our catchment area larger but doesn’t increase Cardiff’s population.
Newcastle itself and Sunderland aren’t much different in size. Newcastle is 114 km2, Sunderland is 137.5 km2, Cardiff is 140 km2. Google is your friend:hehe:

yes spot on - not only that but while we were bobbing around in the lower leagues for 20 years, the premier league was launched with its increased exposure and reach.

This is correct, the early years of the Premier League with all its razzmatazz & hype sucked loads into the trap of being an armchair glory fan, unfortunately we were knocking around the dungeon. Other similar sized or even smaller clubs had a bit of Premier League limelight and fans stuck, our 2 or 3 thousand at the time stuck but we’ve had to work like f*ck for another 20 thousand +.

nah, Newcastle includes Gateshead and most of Tyneside. its a much bigger place than Cardiff. Ditto Sunderland with county Durham.
Political boundaries mean nothing in respect of urban sprawl.

Cardiff are the closest football club to about 1 million people. Newcastle and Sunderland are big clubs with massive catchment areas but it doesn’t get much bigger than ours.

The Cardiff urban area is about half a million
Newcastles urban area about 850 , its substantially bigger
The capital city region is as you say about 1 million but includes Newport which is about 300 k and all the valleys towns
They might be potential Cardiff fans but as always with us it's getting them to support us that's the problem

This isn't entirely accurate but close

If you go to " Newcastle " or "Nottingham" it's obvious they are bigger places than Cardiff despite the fact that their urban centres are smaller
Leeds is one team that has never really punched above its weight as its only got 1 club in a very big city

That doesn't apply to Ipswich. They haven't been in the Premier League since 2002. spent the last four seasons before this in League One. Average Championship league position 2002-2019 (17 seasons) was 11.3. Cardiff City in the same period never went into League One, got to the Premier League twice and spent 18 seasons in Championship with an average league position of 9.6. Clearly a better record for City in the last two decades.

That’s not right, cardiff alone will be 450,000 soon with all the new developments north and west, you add penarth, Barry, caerphilly which are all very close or touching distance and it’s 6/700,000
