60,70 or 80 thousand deaths should be being reported, even if it’s not true, perhaps the death toll should be exaggerated to hit home how serious this is to people who think it’s ok to congregate down The Docks eating ice cream on a warm Sunday. Complacency is creeping in and nothing is being done about it, seems as though some people do need to be rudely awakened.

Absolutely no way you can objectively prove it, of course.

I've been thinking about that question for a while.
My initial thought was that a labour government, especially a left one would have been more likely to have acted earlier.
Tories hate the government doing anything - ever. They want the free market and choice to solve all of our problems, so I think this was partly responsible for the delay in action at the start of this crisis.
Labour wouldn't have had this - but you can be confident that they would have had whatever action they produced very severely criticized in the media in a way that the Tories have mostly been insulated from thus far, which could itself have affected their choices, or how well the public would have stuck to the advice.

Other governments around the world have shown that with good leadership deaths could have been kept to a minimum and others have shown that things could be worse but not much more worse.

The following chart is telling. Belgium lead the way because they assume almost all (94%) care home deaths are caused by Covid 19 after that only France "outperforms" the UK.

Who knows whether a different UK Government would have seen lower figures, shouldn't the relevant question be would another Government have been as indecisive during February and early March in their decision making and in terms of preparation for what was coming?

What about the countless examples of governments around the world handling it better?

The government were told to close schools, restaurants and pubs in February and ignored it. How many people did that kill?

It doesn’t matter if someone else would have done it better, even I’d they wouldn’t have that doesn’t mean this government are beyond criticism.

No nation is identical.

Can you name, for example, one nation in Europe with a city the size and density of London?

People champion NZ - well, it's easier to contain and isolate there because population density is lower... christ, some regions you've miles to nearest neighbour.

What we do know is this Government's handling of it has been a total disaster.
