Would love to know how many people who voted in this petition were against the (far bigger) one calling for another Brexit referendum because "democracy had spoken" :sherlock:

Twitter's influence is dwindling by the week. It used to feel very relevant and important - it was great in it's heyday but it is getting worse all the time.
These days every time I go on there I'm exposed to overt racism and antisemitism - like old fashioned 1970s style stuff that I hadn't seen expressed in years.
The whole site is completely overrun by bots - the best bit about twitter used to be the replies- but these days 90%+ of them are bots posting completely unrelated content, so you don't et any discussion on whats been originally posted. The 10% that aren't bots are onlyfans girls promoting their pornography, and that is just as tiresome.
It also just doesn't work as well as it used to - videos seldom play that well, sometimes the sound of on video continues playing over the next video you've watched etc.
None of the alternatives are anywhere as good as Twitter used to be unfortunately - Bluesky is probably the closest, but has some way to go before it feels as vibrant and important.
I tihnk at the current rate, within 5 years Twitter will not be major player any more - it can happen to online based companies very quickly - look at MySpace, that was the leading social media site a while back, not sure it even exists now.
Or facebook even, still massive but now only used by boomers pretty much.
I'm sure it had some small influence for Trump in the recent US election (given the amount of pro-trump / anti Kamala content that was getting shoved in my direction on a daily basis, and I couldn't even vore in it) - but I can't see that being the case in future elections as Twitter loses its relevance.

That's because the previous owner was sending out smoke signals that spoke to your tribe, and now hearing the truth is a little too jarring for you.

Honestly, not at all. I don't mind alternative viewpoints at all, and i enjoy sensible debate - my main criticism of bluesky so far is it's all a bit too nice - its people posting photos of owls and sunsets and saying how much they liked the Wicked movie (although would prefer it if th two leads were paid the same) :puke:
What twitter is rapidly becoming is certainly not the "truth" in the past 24 hours I've seen posts calling all black people criminals, and saying they should be sent back to Africa - and saying equally awful antisemitic things (not criticism of Israel - genuine old school "the jews deserve what they get as they are controlling everything etc" type of stuff. And any replies to these things are drowned out by 200 memes posted by bots - it's just unusuable these days. If it doesn't make some significant changes soon I predict it will die a very quick death.

A quick browse of their jobs section suggests that they won't be going anywhere. In fact, the stuff they are currently working on is quite scary, as they really do want to be an "everything" app.

Looks like all that seething behind the wheel as you slowly navigate Cardiff's northern suburbs has addled your memory.
Johnson, or Boris as you affectionately call him, was not defenestrated by his own party because of Partygate. It was a contributory factor in the decline of support within the Tory party but ne survived a vote of confidence despite this.
He was unceremoniously shoved out of office because he knowingly appointed a well known sex pest as his Whip and lied about whether he had prior knowledge before his appointment.
This was enough for 60 Secretaries of State, Ministers and PPS to either verbally or in writing resign, including the current and previous leaders of the Conservative Party.
He was hung drawn and quartered by his own party. Your sausage roll schtick might give you some personal sustinence but to most others it looks like you haven't left the denial phase of the grieving process for your gone and long forgotten "hero".

That stat on Bromley is such a good one and a great pub quiz question!
As regards the board, South Wales Central gave 40% of it's vote to Labour in the last senedd elections but only 46% turned out to vote, so only around one in five voted for the main left-of-centre party and many of them would have been centrists or even socially conservative Labour supporters so to conclude I think the board is still disproportionately populated by raging leftard loony trokskyite commies etc

No - she is the next door MP (Sheffield Heeley). I am now in Sheffield Hallam (Olivia Blake).
This Louise Haigh story gets more and more strange. The original so-called fraud was at worst a trivial act by a young woman to get an upgraded work phone. Otherwise it was a genuine mistake as she claims. It was all in the public domaine. She told Starmer but his henchmen have leaned on her for allegedly breaking the ministerial code with a line of argument that is so contrived it is ludicrous.
I reckon he is still upset with her for calling out P&O.

Yeah I have to say, I haven't poured over the full details but it seems a relatively trivial issue that I think is best served by an apology and a tightening of the rules if deemed necessary. A yellow card if you will. Unfortunately we live in very puritanical times in these respects and an era of seemingly zero tolerance.
What I do find odd, is that morally at least I think most would think that Rachel Reeves 'flexibility' over her CV is more deceitful, although also not a resigning matter in my opinion.
-
Re: Petition to get rid of starmer and his cronies
I don't care a toss about starmer or Haigh or Reeves
Because the labour majority is massive and the levelling out of the feckwit reform party at 18 percent means those votes are lost forever to the Tories
In the same way that the liberals have dented Labour's chances and split the anti tory vote farage has pissed all over the Tories
That why there are so many cries from tge daily mail and all those idiots and the thicko sun type readers .....its going to go on and on and these loons will have this false hope that a tidal wave of right wing voters will triumph
But the exact opposite will happen .....in fact it's better for reform to be where it is than in single figures like it was before
Thanks Nigel and please keep having heart attacks all you conspiracy nutters and trump wannabees as you are cut adrift in electoral no man's land 😢

He's got hundreds of MPs to sacrifice
It's sad in some ways as I think he's utterly hopeless but when he is eventually on his arse he will be replaced and the poor Tories and reform and the daily mail will be fighting like ferrets in a sack and totally without power

Forget the petition, it's just a bit of fun. Labour are behind in three of the last five polls now.
I can well believe that they may have chosen to get some of the tougher decisions out early to bite the bullet - not a bad long term tactic if it works - but in terms of popularity, has there ever been a government that has roundly lost it's popularity so rapidly?
I think most of us said so at the time, that even if the result was similar, it didn't feel like 1997, and that certainly seems to be true.
Looking at the post '97 polls, Labour went up to 63% a few months after the election. Quite extraordinary really.

early days in a parliament makes little difference to voters apparently, most floating voters vote based on the last 18 months tops before an election - so they're probably getting all the unpopular stuff out of the way first now then throw us a bone in a year or two

It worries me that most of what they have done isn't even controversial yet they can't get out in front of the inevitable response.
Winter Fuel Allowance - benefits should be means tested, come up with a scheme/roadmap that helps those caught in the just above pension credit grey area.
VAT on private schools - country can't afford to give a tax break to private schools, show kids in top hats that nobody normal can relate to. If a Tory mentions the pressure on state schools as a result, ask them about their migration record and funding and show the pressure that has caused (likely far more)
Employer NI - I think quite a few of the businesses kicking up a fuss would have seen more impact by the recent inflation matching rises in min wage. Likely increase for an employee on the median wage is 900£. Oh and if a FTSE100 boss criticises it, do a tiny bit of research and publicly ask why their CEO earns 50+% more than they did pre-pandemic.
Public sector pay-rise - relate criticism to services/people that the public rely on and aggressively point at the above about CEO pay while asking why needing to give pay rises to 'retain talent' doesn't apply to nurses etc. At the moment some private sector employees are looking for a race to the bottom with the public sector, they should be looking at the obscene salaries at the top of their own business.
Farmers - publicly sling mud at people who have used it as a tax avoidance scheme until the whole alliance crumbles. Anybody who supports Clarkson, Dyson etc or publishes anything they say is supporting tax avoidance and hurting farmers in the long term.
Unfortunately this government doesn't seem to have the balls/inclination to upset people at the top. The reality is that the public/taxpayer are being taken for a ride and they should keep saying this and linking it the Tories as much as they can, rather than the tired 'liz truss crashed the economy' yawnfest. And finally make some laws around transparency of the credentials/funding of experts (i.e. think-tank grads) that are plastered all over the TV/media pushing narratives.

Of course, it is, back Public Sector with excessive pay rises £11Billion and taking a tiny proportion from pensioners, 1.5Billion, it's idiotic politics, lose the next election in the first few weeks of power it's plan daft.
Employer NI, shatters any prospect of growth and investment in private companies.
Farmers turn off all voters from rural communities.
Private schools will increase the burden on standard schools as middle earners with businesses affected by NI rises for their employees and VAT on school fees, will withdraw from Private Education.
Wait till the railways get worse and all the other cockups take hold, this is supposed to be a COVID-free recovery period for growth and improvement, but we will go backward and end up in a worse mess in four years.
Come back in four years and see how we compare directly with the US, I'm not a fan of Trump but he will will go for growth and investment, and we are doing the opposite.

What would the right pay rise have been in % terms?

So you are predicting a recession next quarter, next year? I would just like to set a line in the sand so we can revisit it later.

Numbers? All conjecture until it actually happens. Country can't afford to subsidise people who chose to send their kids to private school anymore. I used to play cricket at a local private primary school, they had a swimming pool, state of the art sports facilities and more land than every local secondary combined. Why should the taxpayer subsidise that through tax breaks at the expensive of their own children's education?

Growth at the expense of millions of working families doesn't benefit the country.

Why wait 4 years, maybe look at the last 4 years. How did the conservatives led UK compare to democrat led US during that time period?
