I never heard of them until a friend of mine started raving about them in a pub in about 1993 To this day I can't think of a hit song they played or sang. Pretty average I think, like some of the others people seem to "wurship"

The Doors were one of the finest rock bands ever and certainly the best 60s band there was. No one comes close to touching their 60s output.
As I was around in the 60's and involved with the music scene in South Wales the big hitters were the Beatles, Stones, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas (their led guitarist Mike Maxwell ended up as manager of the Barrats music shop in St Mary's Street). The Yardbirds, the Doors etc were popular but only to a less than mainstream music lover. I was a fan of them both. The KInks were poplar but behind those I mentioned.
I would say Gerry and the Pacemakers and Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas were very much first half of sixties acts (as were the Searchers who were maybe the third biggest after the Beatles and the Stones at one time) and then the Yardbirds, Doors etc. appeared in the second half of the sixties, while the likes of the Who, Kinks and Hollies remained big for all but the first few years of the decade.
True. But they were only a support act when I saw them at the Capitol Cinema in in around 1965 when they, among other acts, supported Chuck Berry (who was awful). I saw them again at some point but can't remember when but they were again a support act. They were nowhere near as big in the UK as some of the other bands at the time and, like the Doors, had more of a cult following.
I was hardly going to list them all. Saw Led Zepelin several times at the Top Rank. Yes they were popular but mainly followed by music lovers and those who appreciated musical talent rather than the people who bought singles. You could also mention Deep Purple, who I have also seen, as well as countless others of that ilk.
Anyway, yes the Doors were truly a great band. 6 amazing albums in 4 years. Hugely popular in the '60s '80s, 90's and to this day.
