I’m always baffled when international sides with pools of players the size of England’s end up playing people out of position. Madness.
Central defence looks suspect and I'm amazed they can't find a left back other than injury prone Shaw

Well if that was an England player challenged in the box the likes of shearer would be screaming penalty all day long

It's only cheating when the foreigners do it

Foden is like the invisible man so far.
Southgate has got to make more use off his talent.

I would rather see them be a little more cavalier with the talent on show , somehow I doubt I have ever been a consideration of the English FA .
If Southgate is keeping them conservative, then I’d sack him tonight. They aren’t good enough to adopt those tactics.
A decent team would piss all over them tonight.

Awkward, I s’pose, attempting to fit talented players into an XI, when they play in similar positions as each other for their clubs.

Those young Germans would pose them a few problems.

They may well win the whole thing but they didn't look great tonight

Not the best game of the tournament so far.
-
Re: EURO'S thread. Sunday 16th June 2024.
Better teams will cut through that defence with ease.

England bought free kicks all second half.

England were poor. Slow in possession, Kane was bullied, couldn't get saka in the game 2nd half, Serbia got much higher up the pitch. If Serbia had that bit of quality in the final third this would have been a different result.

They'll have to do a lot better than that if they want to win it. Early days though.

And there are a few teams in this tournament who have that bit of quality, they’ll need to up their game considerably to have a successful campaign.

"The most talented squad in the tournament" managed 3 shots on target. Lucky 3 points. No way will it be coming home.

It’s too early to say. Anyone think Argentina would win the World Cup after losing their first game to Saudi ?

Re: EURO'S thread. Sunday 16th June 2024.
Yes I'm biased but I don't think I've watched a tournament winner tonight. England were on top for the first 30 minutes but from then on it was mostly all Serbia.
Foden was awful. Maybe he lacks confidence without his Man City chums around. Kane was like a big girl's blouse, falling down every time an opponent went near him. For me Declan Rice stood out, an excellent defensive midfield performance and Bellingham played OK too. Other than that, very average and in the end Serbia can consider themselves unlucky not to have come away with a draw.

I agree with most of what you say, but Serbia weren’t unlucky. Apart from a decent shot from range they created next to nothing.
As for the tournament, I doubt anyone thought they’d seen the winner when Portugal drew their opening game of Euro 2016 1-1 with Iceland. Long way to go.

I'd build a team around Foden, that's how highly i rate him. God knows what England does to top level midfield players.

They weren't unlucky, they lacked quality. A team with that quality would have beaten England Comfortably this evening, That will be a worry for Southgate. Thankfully,(for them) it was serbia

He was dreadful tonight. The curious thing was Southgate leaving him on for the pitch for the whole game.

It's actually quite refreshing to see the BBC pundits being critical of England's performance.

Yup. I haven't seen much of him, but what i have seen has been excellent. He's so quick on the ball, and his decision making is brilliant.**** knows what happened in this game.

We’re basically saying if Serbia weren’t Serbia the result could have been different. But if Serbia weren’t Serbia the game would have been different too. England were poor second half, no doubt about it, but they won. That’s all that really matters at this stage.

I think unlucky from the point of view that they were on the front foot for almost the last hour of the game and not many teams are able to dominate England for that long. Some lovely ball control and passing movements too but no end product unfortunately for them.
-
Re: EURO'S thread. Sunday 16th June 2024.
Southgate will cost England yet another tournament. His tactics are dire. He’s got arguably the best squad in the competition and hasn’t a clue what to do.
They should have beaten Italy in the last final, and the WC draw opened up like a dream for them.
He was shit as a club manager and he’s shit as an international manager.
This is a golden era for England talent wise, but they’ll be the same as Belgium. The middle of a doughnut to show for it.
I don’t really give a rats arse as I’m Welsh, but the English FA have dropped a bollock keeping him in charge.

Well, the fact is that Serbia were Serbia, and they lacked quality in the final third. If they'd have possessed that quality then England would have lost in my opinion. I would bet that Gareth southgate and his coaching staff would be slightly concerned. Expect to see a more dynamic England performance in their next game. They were under pressure during the 2nd half and didn't deal with it well. That'll be a worry for them, i'm sure of that.

They were unlucky the goal came from a deflected cross. Apart from that England created nothing.

Re: EURO'S thread. Sunday 16th June 2024.
Are England too much of a collection of very gifted individuals when it comes to attacking play? I don’t watch them very often these days, but, when I do, I end up thinking they should be better than this - I thought that the best part of the team last night was the defence which was meant to be their weak point.
-
Re: EURO'S thread. Sunday 16th June 2024.
If he plays TAA in midfield against a team like France, Spain or Germany it will cost them. He looked like a chicken with his head cut off when Serbia had the ball, positioning all wrong which isn’t surprising considering he doesn’t play there usually.
Bellingham is an incredible player. Tired a bit in the second but in the first half was the one player demanding the ball and dragging them upfield.
Foden genuinely might as well not have been on the field… Rob Page level tactics and awareness to not take him off on the hour mark. Southgate is a shocking manager stuck in the mid 2000s, probably wishing he’d taken Henderson with him after all.

It certainly doesn’t seem to work as constructed Bob, Kane likes to drop deep from the 9, Bellingham likes to drop very deep from the 10, Foden and Saka completely isolated, he’s got a full back in midfield and two full backs who very rarely get forward to support. You wonder exactly how he’s trying to have them play.

Look no further than Southgate, and they'll probably give him knighthood too!

Re: EURO'S thread. Sunday 16th June 2024.
England started very well for twenty-five minutes, but after that, they got weaker and weaker as the game went on and allowed them back into the game. They are in the weakest group and are probably just about in the top ten based on that overall performance, a mile behind Germany and Spain who battered their weak opponents.

Apart from Kane having his header pushed onto the bar by the keeper...

He was largely anonymous, unless touching the ball 20 times was part of the plan?
