Re: The Donald Trump thread
By the way, I'm in Ireland at the moment and there is considerable concern about Trump's proposed tariffs; a whacking 27% of Irish exports go to the USA, the major importer of their goods!

Are you aware that Ireland charge tariffs on USA goods going into Ireland ? Tariffs are common between non EU and EU countries
You can argue the amount but it's a fact of business
The last 2 months USA has now attracted close to 4 trillion dollars of new investment into the USA
This so called ' Liberation day' tomorrow will be interesting and could go a bit crazy around the world markets !
Think it's the wrong thing to do mind

The point is that Ireland is considered to be the most exposed country in the EU regarding high US tariffs.

I'd blame it on those kilts they wear.

yes there are a number of large medtech firms who relocated to Ireland for their favourable tax rates. and the US market is massive for med tech, not just because of the size, but firms can charge a lot more there for the same product

That's true but it doesn't deflect from the immediate concern here.
Re: The Donald Trump thread
Listening to his speech on these tariffs.
He has a way of doing things that is surely unique in the world?
Five minutes into the speech to a global audience he pulls up some autoworker to talk in very straight terms about his job and factories closing in Detroit etc.
No one else does that do they?
Economically it feels the world changes slightly today, depending on how everyone reacts

Laughable. His unilateral declaration of a trade war will make every poor person on the planet worse off.

Well I guess we are about to find out.
One likely scenario though is that it actually leads to a rather rapid reduction in tariffs given he cites those on US goods as justification for the changes.
I think it's a power play more than anything

James, you don’t have to come and hear and try and defend Trump just because it’s what you think you’re expected to do. If any other leader of one of the other major counties of the world introduced tariffs in the way Trump has they’d be labelled mad, but, because of who it is, people just shrug their shoulders and mutter “it’s just Trump being Trump”.

Is that his problem?

Yes but he can do it because of how strong americas economy is.
The jeopardy is lower for him than others

I'm not sure about that.
For everyone else, they have one country with extra tariffs, albeit a major one.
For the US, it's everyone they trade with. They aren't going to start manufacturing enough for themselves over night. I'd say jeopardy and risk is far higher for the US than others.

It looks like a list of countries, with a basic formula for allocating a tariff amount. I say that as one of the countries is an island inhabited by penguins. I'm not sure much planning has gone into this.
A likely scenario is that it will all get abandoned soon, Trump will spin it as being the strong man, the global alpha who everyone is afraid of, and two or three posters on here will lap it up.

No, it was under Biden that America has had the strong economy - well, stronger than the one they've had in the past three months anyway.

On Trump, he couldn’t care less what effect any decision has as long as the world is talking about him.

Anyone notice the apt frame crop on Victoria Derbyshire?
That Gorka is a right tool. Horrible man.

He would! This is also only the latest Incarnation. He's interviewed on Newsnight by Victoria Derbyshire quite often. Always the same tone

I'm not sure that's a defence Bob.
It is true, we are about to find out.
It is true that these tariffs will be a starting point with many countries negotiating to bring them down.
I also do think it's a power play to flex American muscles in the global manufacturing/goods market. And it's political as much as anything Lewis Goodall said as much on Newsnight as well.

Phenomenally stupid, and that's even before we consider the political implications of a disunited Europe within the new world order.
