I probably won't be going back to the USA - at least not whilst it continues its' present journey from the latest iteration of imperial oligarchy, through outright authoritarianism, towards the end game of fascism with Donald using ICE and the National Guard as his personal stormtroopers. There have been elements of that in the past, but along with attacks on the media and judiciary it seems to be speeding up!
I have seen what I really wanted to see, so a return anytime soon is not worth the stress and the queues!

Re: The Donald Trump thread
When it comes to those files it doesn't matter what side of the political spectrum the people in them are on, they all deserve to be exposed and should be punished accordingly. That's seems to be something most people agree on across the divide

Exactly.

Re: The Donald Trump thread
Trump's urging his Republican buddies to vote to release the files now! What's going on? An interesting game.

He was going to lose (vote and political capital) on release of the files so he is trying to get in front of the story by leading the retreat (TACO) and pretend this is always what he wanted. Damage limitation!

If there's any more damaging revelations to come has he (or more likely his crisis team) decided it's just about feasible to deflect as "fake news"? Maybe they've decided there's no smoking gun! It'll be interesting to watch developments.

In that case you can put the BBC app back on your phone now.

It's boomerang time tomorrow isn't it?, everyone is going to get what they wanted aren't they? or maybe not. Let's see if anyone votes no to the release.

Re: The Donald Trump thread
People do have to question themselves as to why he gets under their skin regardless of his character flaws.
To me GW Bush was then a horrific president and a huge Warhawk to boot.
I couldn’t stand him and to see people forget about him and bash Trump, just boils my brain.
This is not a defense of Trump or his misgivings by the way, just a comparison of what to me was a proper idiot with his strings being pulled by the likes of Chaney, Romsfeld and whoever else from Halliburton.
It’s now forgotten, it’s like it didn’t exist because it was slightly before the cultures wars.
I honestly believe that Trump is a much more benign president of The US than probably Bush and certainly Bush Jr but people have just lost their minds in The Trump persona.

I think it is mainly just because Trump is there now - on our screens, bullying the world and spewing his every waking thought over social media (which was not available to Bush, Clinton, Bush Jnr etc).
The record of Neo-Con war criminals who previously occupied the White House may well be fading in some memories. I almost started a thread on Dick Chaney when he checked out a couple of weeks ago - wish I had now. It would have been a chance to discuss the points you raised and maybe play 'Bad, Worse, Worst' with recent US presidents.

The common theme is that all the bad ones are Republicans. That fact alone should raise an alarm

How do you think Trump would have reacted if he had been President when 9/11 happened?

He would have been in the bunker faster than Dubya!
Then declared war on Albania and released plans for a Trump golf course on the site of the Twin Towers?

I am surprised that he hasn’t said…that wouldn’t have happened on my watch.
I think the Afghanistan thing would have been similar.
Saudi relations would have been tense.
Iraq still wouldn’t have been invaded.

Only a common theme if you let your confirmation bias run riot!
Trump is Trump, we've said enough about him. But Biden was widely criticised and ultimately disliked. Accused of touching women inappropriately and funded a war in the middle east. Obama was a pretty respectable politician and a fine statesman, but made a lot of mistakes in 8 years. Wars in the middle east, mass deportations. Basically the same stuff Trump did but he gets away with it, probably cos he is fine statesman.
Bush Jnr - as discussed. Widely criticised, but wasn't universally disliked and broadly respected on the economy I believe. Couldn't win after 9/11 I guess, but Iraq wholly a mistake. I don't see how he couldn't take down the Taliban though.
Clinton. Democrat. Probably the greatest abuse of power in recent political history, getting a blow job from an intern in the oval office. Seems to have been cosier with Epstein and other wrong uns.

Clinton and Obama both exuded charm and were both quite liked/respected globally.
I liked them both.
I honestly couldn’t care less about the Lewinsky thing although it wouldn’t slightly surprise me if he was active on Epstein's Island, neither would I be surprised if Trump had a similar appearance rate there.
I think that Ocham’s Razor suggests that it was all a schmoozy elite entrapment project.

I think this just confirms your own personal bias, as if the World and his wife didn't know it to death

Critiquing both parties? What bias is that?
If you think only Republicans have been baddies and that Democrats goodies then I assure you, that's your bias at play!
