What to wear to a graduation
I may be going to my son's Cardiff University graduation on Thursday.
He is not sure if he is going, because his late mother will not be there.
If I do go, are guests expected to wear a suit?
I do have one ,but I hate wearing it especially since the only time I have worn it was to my wife's funeral last year.
I am normally a joggers and T shirt person and I seem to recall at my other son's graduation about
20 years ago,I wore jeans and t shirt.
Advice anyone please?

Perhaps ask your son what he would like to see you wear that would make him comfortable in attending himself. It should be a proud day for both of you so I hope he decides to go. Congratulations.

I would go with trousers and shirt, tie if you really want to. No need to suit and boot it.

Re: What to wear to a graduation
Firstly sorry for your loss and sensitive to your situation.
My son graduated at Cardiff as well and we dressed 'smart casual'. I guess it depends on the weather. Hope you both decide to go and you can celebrate his achievement.

Not even lecturers wear suits. Smart casual will be fine. Just think about what you would consider looks fine alongside your son when you have some lovely photos of the day.

Re: What to wear to a graduation
Sorry to go with a different opinion. I hate wearing suits.
I don't like shoes very much either.
But I wore a suit to my sons Cardiff graduation 2 years ago.

Full cardiff city kit. If you don't have one, then wear whatever makes you happy, the important thing is that you're there with your lad

As lots have said already smart casual is fine. I went to my sons Oxford Graduation Day a few years back and cas' was king there too.
His mother will be there looking down, smiling and very proud of him. Good luck!

I don't really have anything smart casual these days as I never really need it. I should probably get some just in case!
So I guess my suit, but probably no tie.
I will have to cheat with shoes as formal shoes hurt my feet, so my smart black Skechers will do.
Thanks everyone

if you want to go smart casual, just your suits trousers and a shirt
the main thing is though, enjoy the day with your lad

Yes good idea,I might forego the jacket.
Thanks, if my son decides to go, I am sure we will enjoy the day.
With much sadness as well as his mum would have loved to see him.

Re: What to wear to a graduation
Sorry about the passing of your wife.
I wouldn't wear a suit. Treat yourself to a new pair of trousers and shirt; wearing new clothes has a certain 'feel-good' factor about it.
-
Re: What to wear to a graduation
I’d go for trousers and shirt no tie, if it was me. But I’d personally accept the foot pain and wear proper shoes.
Either way, I’d echo what others have said in making sure that you do both go, it’s a big achievement and a milestone in his life. And also, sorry for your loss, I hope you are still able to make the day a happy one.
-
Re: What to wear to a graduation
Above all, make sure you go. Went to my boy’s in Liverpool 20 odd years ago, very proud day especially for my late mother, what an experience it was for her, a Splott boy in a mortar board & gown. Don’t underestimate your part in it either, you’ve played your part leading up to the day:thumbup:
-
Re: What to wear to a graduation
I think for his big day you should make an effort. Tidy shirt, trousers & shoes, stick a tie in your pocket just in case you need it and have the photo shoot after. A day to remember; have a lovely day EB.
-
Re: What to wear to a graduation
Make sure you shave. You wouldn't want folk mistaking you for one of the lecturers.
-
Re: What to wear to a graduation
Only graduation I’ve been to was my brother’s forty odd years ago. At the time, I thought I was dressed up to the nines, but, in reality, it was smart casual - I’m no expert, but I can remember not feeling out of place back in 1982 I think it was and I can’t imagine things have changed to a more formal approach since then.
-
Re: What to wear to a graduation
Smart casual is fine. Especially this time of year. A pair of trousers and an open-neck shirt will be fine.

I have a beard anyway! I will get it trimmed tomorrow, so people will know that I am not a lecturer!
Perhaps I should have bought a tweed jacket with elbow patches to confuse everyone.
(Do people still wear those?? I know some of my teachers did,but that was over 50 years ago)

Smart casual is perfect.
My youngest son did The Ayatollah on his way up to collect his degree which was obviously the highlight of his academic career :-)

Go bollock naked: it will be memorable

Re: What to wear to a graduation
I'm at the graduation today as well. Suit trousers, shirt and tie for me. I was also at a graduation in Newport ICC yesterday as well and smart casual is fine. It was nice seeing some parents of African heritage wearing traditional clothes.
-
Re: What to wear to a graduation
If you don’t want to wear a suit I would say Trousers and a Shirt.
I think the world has become less formal though, I went for an interview earlier this week and wanted to wear a suit but everyone told me not to, I didn’t but if I had I would have been the only one in a suit.
-
Re: What to wear to a graduation
Suits aren't "normal" these days, go smart casual.
Remember you are likely to be in a photo with your son, think what you'd like to see in 10-20 years.

Re: What to wear to a graduation
My son graduated yesterday at Cardiff University
Trousers comfortable shoes tshirt and a jacket which I didn't wear as it was too warm - there were fellas in jeans and t shirts and trainers - nobody cares - go and enjoy yourself
My boy did the ayatollah when he he was on stage - proud Dad moment

Re: What to wear to a graduation
The time of graduation ceremonies makes me happy and sad. I so wanted my mum to be at my graduation but unfortunately I couldn’t complete the additional work I needed in time and graduated the year following her death.
It’s an important occasion. Enjoy it. Share with friends and family. Take lots of photos. In these photos you will be happy that you took a bit of trouble about your appearance.
My old tutor advised me to buy something that was special to me and that every time I saw it or used it it would act like a conduit to the hard work that went into achieving the award.
It’s the advice that I in turn gave to my students and shared with colleagues so they could in their turn also share.
Apologies if this is a bit too personal and morbid but enjoy the day.

No,like you my son should have graduated last year, but because of the stress caused by my near death experience in the summer/autumn of 2022 he had to delay his course and graduation for a year. ( I have told the board before about my cardiac arrest at home followed by a 4 month hospital stay, including 6 weeks in a coma).
This would have meant that his mum would have seen his graduation as she went into hospital a week after last year's ceremony and sadly never came home.
Thanks for your good wishes and advice.

Can I ask why??
Mike doesn't often close threads why this one?
I would be a bit bloody annoyed if he did, to be honest

Strange request, it’s a lovely thread. Not a word I’d normally use, ‘lovely’, but it sorts of sums up a lot of the sentiments.

Re: What to wear to a graduation
This thread highlights the helping and friendship offered by board users.
The other thread was just ruined.

Re: What to wear to a graduation
I hope you have a fantastic day if your son decides to go Elwood. A proud day for you amongst the sadness. Best of wishes to you all.
