I'm at the graduation today as well. Suit trousers, shirt and tie for me. I was also at a graduation in Newport ICC yesterday as well and smart casual is fine. It was nice seeing some parents of African heritage wearing traditional clothes.

If you don’t want to wear a suit I would say Trousers and a Shirt.

I think the world has become less formal though, I went for an interview earlier this week and wanted to wear a suit but everyone told me not to, I didn’t but if I had I would have been the only one in a suit.

Suits aren't "normal" these days, go smart casual.

Remember you are likely to be in a photo with your son, think what you'd like to see in 10-20 years.

The time of graduation ceremonies makes me happy and sad. I so wanted my mum to be at my graduation but unfortunately I couldn’t complete the additional work I needed in time and graduated the year following her death.

It’s an important occasion. Enjoy it. Share with friends and family. Take lots of photos. In these photos you will be happy that you took a bit of trouble about your appearance.

My old tutor advised me to buy something that was special to me and that every time I saw it or used it it would act like a conduit to the hard work that went into achieving the award.

It’s the advice that I in turn gave to my students and shared with colleagues so they could in their turn also share.

Apologies if this is a bit too personal and morbid but enjoy the day.

No,like you my son should have graduated last year, but because of the stress caused by my near death experience in the summer/autumn of 2022 he had to delay his course and graduation for a year. ( I have told the board before about my cardiac arrest at home followed by a 4 month hospital stay, including 6 weeks in a coma).

This would have meant that his mum would have seen his graduation as she went into hospital a week after last year's ceremony and sadly never came home.

Thanks for your good wishes and advice.

    Can I ask why??

Mike doesn't often close threads why this one?

I would be a bit bloody annoyed if he did, to be honest

Strange request, it’s a lovely thread. Not a word I’d normally use, ‘lovely’, but it sorts of sums up a lot of the sentiments.

This thread highlights the helping and friendship offered by board users.

The other thread was just ruined.

I hope you have a fantastic day if your son decides to go Elwood. A proud day for you amongst the sadness. Best of wishes to you all.

Go with what you are comfortable wearing, sketchers are also sensible.

Trousers and a shirt seems sensible, and the tie in the pocket was also good advice. You could always put it on for a photo and take it off and unbutton the top 1 or 2 buttons once formalities are out of the way. Another option due to the weather would be a short sleeve shirt.

Ultimately I wouldn't worry about what other people were wearing, if you rock up with a shirt and tie on and others are less informal with jeans and a t-shirt it is what it is, the main thing is you are there and you are happy with how you look, you'll have the photos to look back on in a few years so really it comes down to how you want them to look. Would it matter in 5/10 years time what you wore? to would you remember the day with your lad more?

I have all this to come, but even at the open days there are differences in peoples appearances (kids and parents) with some people putting in more effort than others, I think the main thing is just being there.

Re: What to wear to a graduation

I've been driving past the Cardiff university all week and they've had graduations on holding up the traffic so I've probably seen several hundred graduation attendees.

they were mostly pretty smartly dressed, so I'd go as a minimum smart trousers and a shirt, maybe a jacket if it isn't too hot.

I hope you go and manage to persuade him to go as well. :)

sometimes it's easy to rely on the women in our lives to force us into doing this kind of thing - I know I've been guilty of that in many instances. Keeping it going when the women aren't forcing you into it (divorce in my case) is a nice way of showing that you are there for them especially if it's out of your comfort zone.

Go reasonably smart. After all the pictures you will have taken may be on display for a very long time and you do not wish your child to be ashamed of the scruffy nature of the parental outfit. Personally I would wear a suit.

Absolutely. I'm not sure of the timelines Elwood but just go as you want mate. You're there and that's what counts. If it's happened, hope you had a fab day, if it hasn't, hope you have a fab day!

So I guess my suit, but probably no tie.

I will have to cheat with shoes as formal shoes hurt my feet, so my smart black Skechers will do.

    Thanks everyone
Perfect, enjoy the day, you should be proud

Not the audience for it on here, you cant even slightly joke without someone crying for it to stop and for everyone to play nice.
