Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
Interesting choices, so Chambers is to be a guaranteed starter you would think. But in which position?
Colwill to be captain tomorrow then, also a very likely starter.

Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
I happy with chambers. But Colwill never saw that coming. One he’s just not that good, when he has the ball he hardly ever makes the right decision I would say he very selfish and could do with out the responsibility of being captain.
This is making me doubt BBM now or could it be a masterstroke. Have to wait and see.

Centre-back with Fish and Lawlor fighting for the other spot. I think that's fine for this division but we still badly need a left-back. Bagan's alright for a few games but there's a reason we've been putting someone out of position there for years.
Left back. Now. Please.

Colwill not that good?
He really needs his own pinned thread on here, so we can settle it once and for all.
Good
Not good

Who else did we sign then under similar length contracts that the same would apply to?

Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
No really obvious choice so I'm not surprised. Showing a lot of trust in Colwill and giving him some responsibility like this may help. Really hope he has a great season.

If the reports at the time were right our summer 2024 contracts included: Chris Willock - 3years; Alex Robertson - 4 years; Jesper Daland - 4 years; Will Fish - 4 years; and Roco Simic - 4 years. Then in January Yousef Salech got a 4.5 year deal.

Who’d sign him without him having to take a big cut in wages?

I thought Chambers was the clear obvious choice, not sure about Rubin though!

If things weren't bad enough.😂

Who'd sign him would have done.

Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
Nothing could highlight the lack of genuine leaders in the squad more than these choices.

Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
Chambers a good choice in my opinion. Hopefully he can be our Rolls Royce CB at this level.
BBM clearly rates Colwill, and lets hope he reacts positively to this decision. I think he's gonna rip the league up. Hopefully he does that with Salech, but if Salech goes, then there's Robbo / Davies / Ashford.
I think many on here are overestimating the quality in this league.

I dont think the gap in Championship though is Robin Reliant CB in the Championship to Rolls Royce in L1. 😂

Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
From the squad we have I think chambers is the sensible choice. He was the only one who even attempted to ‘manage the referee’ last season when things were going wrong.
-
Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
I like Chambers in the CDM role, but not in the CB role personally. I'd play him over Wintle in the midfield, and have Fish and Lawlor play CB.
-
Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
I am not happy with this decision. On the one hand, it shows the lack of leaders and voices on the pitch that we have to choose someone like Chambers. On the other hand, it means that he will have to be picked. I don't think he is good enough as a DM and I don't think he is good enough to play centre back.
-
Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
Letting Ralls go was a mistake. Chambers is so terrible (even his peak in midfield was very very average). I dont understand why people are happy about this..
-
Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
I can't say I've ever noticed any "leadership" from Chambers on the pitch from the games I've seen.

Do captains of football teams do that stuff anymore? Maybe 15 years ago, but not now in my opinion. A captain these days is probably more about how the player conducts himself, how professional they are on and off the pitch. The days of shouty footballers who ctash into the opposition is over. Not that i think that you're referring to that type of player

There was a good discussion on this a few weeks ago on TalkSPORT, The strong leader captains like your John Terry and Roy Keane are a thing of the past,
The games changed, young players these days dont respond to being shouted at and dug out by the captain. Danny Murphy said when he was a young player Paul Ince had him by the throat at half time in one game, He said that would never work these days.

Yup, i would agree, those days are long gone. HR would have to work weekends dealing with the number of complaints......

Murphy made the point about the game being less physical too. He said your Keanes and Bryan Robson would pick ball up and drive forward with it to draw a foul and get the crowd up, or clatter into someone themselves and maybe take a yellow. Cant run the risk these days as could end up being sent off.
Simon Jordan made the valid point that your strong apha male types, shouting and cajoling, in the ref’s face, in the oppositions face, even in their own team mates face are now seen as aggressive and in a very negative way. He blames society for being so soft that people with strong opinions like himself are seen as aggressive rather than assertive, :hehe:

It's a minefield. Things have definitely changed though. No doubt there was plenty of bullying going on back in the day, well there was, even us on here would have experienced it as youngsters in the work place, although i don't mind people fronting things up and i have no problem with being told about myself when needed, as long as it's fair.

Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
I think these days the captain’s role is to ensure the manager/coach’s plan is executed out on the pitch.
He should be reminding team mates, cajoling, encouraging, directing….
With Chambers I hope it is not just his age that has led to the decision. But who the hell else is there?

If it's not worth risking a yellow through a Keane/Robson type foul, I'm assuming that our players were only pulling back Notts County players who got the wrong side of them last week because they knew they were unlikely to get booked in a pre season match because we were doing that all over the pitch last weekend. I like what BBM is trying to do with the team and really enjoyed the QPR game, but I mentioned in my blog piece last weekend, the one thing I'm not keen on at the moment is the Man City type fouling when one of our players takes an opponent out so cynically.

From my experience, you would be hard-pushed to get anyone from HR to work weekdays, let alone weekends. Usually to be found taking much needed "me time" away from the office to care for their well-being.

Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
I dont really think it matters who is captain though you need leaders and character which is something this squad doesn't have. Or very little.
My concern is BBM seems to have Chambers as a starter which is worrying and even more so if its at CB.
-
Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
no number 4, 8 or 9 in the squad.
Is it too optimistic to think that's because we're getting in a quality centre back, midfielder and a striker.
-
Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
Well I think today showed we are seriously lacking in leader types. Apart from Wintle there was no-one you could say was leading the rest.
Personally I thought our centre half’s were our two worst players , closely followed by the two wingers. We will get punished against better opposition.

Salah is our number 9 in everything except jersey number. We seriously need a 4 and an 8 thought.

Wow, when did we sign him ?!

Re: Chambers captain, R Colwill vice
Interesting comments from BBM after the game, it seems the captaincy and vice captaincy were decided.by a players vote.

i thought Rubin was excellent at doing that today!
