    3 nil. Watters.
    Defensively Watford ain't great.
Could be a cricket score here if they want it.

    Hoilett didn't practice LWB.

Was Tomlin taken off because he's in the mix for a squad place on Saturday or because they still don't think he can do ninety minutes? I'd say the latter.

I think they wanted to give some minutes to the kids as the game was won. Kavanagh looked decent when he came on

Was it the same formation with wing-backs we're becoming used to? If yes, what positions did Watters, Harris, Hoilett, Tomlin and Williams start off in and did it mix at all?

No, 4-4-2 with Bowen and Tomlin in central midfield, Hoilett on the right, Williams the left (although he came in field a lot) and maybe Harris played slightly behind Watters.

    Thank you

I like the sound of Harris behind Watters but Tomlin in CM seems odd given he's unlikely to play that position at senior level.

I hoped to see Hoilett given a go at Left Wing Back perhaps we already know he can play that role ?

I'm glad McCarthy has given a couple of the youngsters a chance, let's hope his longer term plans are being influenced by the quality and style of play that he's watching from them in training and on their match days. If these lads can fulfil their potential then it's a great chance to finally move our football out of the dark ages, even if half this board seems happy to stay there forever.

I'm sure Hoilett gave away the penalty by the way. Credit to him for tracking back, and I reckon the foul was outside the area, but if that was Dan Martin then I need better glasses.

A bit of reaction to today's game from Morison and Sam Bowen.

I wondered about the penalty and I'll have another look at it and change it if I need to. I may well have been wrong, but Martin doesn't convince me defensively yet and I'd be very surprised if Mick McCarthy considered him for the first team in front of Brown.

Agree about Taylor Jones, he got Bodenham out of trouble a couple of times yesterday.

It was Martin's first 90 minutes since November and it showed at times but I didn't feel he got caught out defensively, it might have been in his interests to have been put under more pressure there to show McCarthy and Connor where that side of his game is at. He took up some good forward positions yesterday (even in a back four) and has got the pace to get back and cover, he seems well suited to a wing back role if McCarthy feels he's up to it.

I'm not sure I quite get the wing back position anyway. Are you following pre-match instructions from your manager or are you just reacting to situations as they occur in the game? I felt sorry for Sang the other night. I'm sure he'd have loved to bomb on all game and show his ability and athleticism but we were playing poorly and being so wasteful with the ball he probably felt it was best to stay home rather than risk a slating for being caught 50 yards out of position when the ball was (inevitably) lost and Huddersfield attacked. Then I came on here and he's getting slated anyway because he didn't get forward enough.

I remember a similar thing happening when Kadeem Harris played there under Trollope. It looks like a great position to play in when it's going well but it must be quite a confusing one if you haven't had a chance to build up an understanding with the centre halves and central midfielders and even more so if your team continually lose the ball and probably haven't got the ability to find you if you do make a good run going forward.

I'm fine with McCarthy wanting people who are defensively sound playing at wing back but with Brown there we were basically playing with four centre halves and the midfield two were getting overrun so we needed to reinforce that area by the end too. I talked earlier about moving our style of play forward but the implications of Friday were a bit worrying. Hopefully it's just short term stuff and McCarthy's got a plan on how to move on from here. The results have been superb so far, of course, but surely this style of play isn't sustainable for long?

I agree with the mix of players for this formation has to be right. especially as we are using a double pivot in midfield - if the wing backs are defenders first then we would basically have 7 outfield players to defend and only 3 to attack.
that makes our attacks far too predictable and it is impossible to create any sort of pressure. so the ball is continually coming back at the defence.
when the u23s have used the formation well in recent weeks the wing backs have always joined in the attacks and overlapped. the extra options in attack has meant that when attacks break down its quickly recycled into another attack. we didn't see that at all against Huddersfield.
if the wing backs are too defensive, it is actually worse for our defence, as the whole team gets pinned back.

I feel for Brown whose reintroduction was enforced rather than managed, which I'm sure contributed to him seeming the square peg in a round hole, but on the small and imperfect sample we saw he doesn't seem like the type of LWB we need.

Pretty sure he's out of contract at the end of the year so we need to see him as CB in a back three and CB in a back two before deciding to extend.

It looks to me that the senior players did more than go through the motions, which is a good sign.

Yes, I think they did and the back four and Sam Bowen, who were the younger, more regular members of the side, didn’t suffer in comparison.

For those of us who watch our under 23s playing three at the back with wing backs on a good day and hope that is the way Mick McCarthy will go when he’s got chance to start building his own team there are contrasting signals. His championing and inclusion of Aden Flint endorses a three stopper type centre backs approach and based on what we’ve seen of Flint and Nelson in the past eighteen months and Morrison for almost seven years says the sort of playing out from the back that we see from the younger players will not be possible or advised in the first team - it also should be said that our goals for and against with Flint, Nelson and Morrison at the back, albeit over a relatively short time, is very good and there has to be a likelihood that breaking up the current to bring in a “passer” at the back would see a reduction in goals from set pieces.

As for wing backs, I’d say it was more encouraging in terms of playing more football while Ng and Bennett were playing there. I would be in favour of us using two players more at home at full back if those two were available given the general ineffectiveness of our wingers over the past three seasons, but Bennett’s injury has put the kibosh on that. If Osei-Tutu could play on the left, I’d get him in the team as soon as possible to play left wing back, but I wonder about whether he’d be ready to do so much before early to mid April.

Ng is comfortable on his left so he could go in there whilst Osei-Tutu goes to right back

Due to his age I imagine Nelson is the safest of the 3 in terms of keeping his place, 27 isn't particularly old for a centre back. Morrison is 30 so we will have to plan for someone to replace him whilst at 31 (32 in the summer) Flint is probably the one who will make way first. Brown is probably lined up to come in for him and would provide more balance to have a left footed player in there. I wouldn't be against trying Pack out in defence in pre season

Yes it is probably naïve optimism on my part that we went to this formation to try and play some more football, rather than to get the maximum number of cloggers on the pitch at the same time.
    I live in hope though

City’s Under 18s are 1-0 up on Colchester at Leckwith after 45 minutes thanks to a goal by Taz Mayembe.
