It was Martin's first 90 minutes since November and it showed at times but I didn't feel he got caught out defensively, it might have been in his interests to have been put under more pressure there to show McCarthy and Connor where that side of his game is at. He took up some good forward positions yesterday (even in a back four) and has got the pace to get back and cover, he seems well suited to a wing back role if McCarthy feels he's up to it.
I'm not sure I quite get the wing back position anyway. Are you following pre-match instructions from your manager or are you just reacting to situations as they occur in the game? I felt sorry for Sang the other night. I'm sure he'd have loved to bomb on all game and show his ability and athleticism but we were playing poorly and being so wasteful with the ball he probably felt it was best to stay home rather than risk a slating for being caught 50 yards out of position when the ball was (inevitably) lost and Huddersfield attacked. Then I came on here and he's getting slated anyway because he didn't get forward enough.
I remember a similar thing happening when Kadeem Harris played there under Trollope. It looks like a great position to play in when it's going well but it must be quite a confusing one if you haven't had a chance to build up an understanding with the centre halves and central midfielders and even more so if your team continually lose the ball and probably haven't got the ability to find you if you do make a good run going forward.
I'm fine with McCarthy wanting people who are defensively sound playing at wing back but with Brown there we were basically playing with four centre halves and the midfield two were getting overrun so we needed to reinforce that area by the end too. I talked earlier about moving our style of play forward but the implications of Friday were a bit worrying. Hopefully it's just short term stuff and McCarthy's got a plan on how to move on from here. The results have been superb so far, of course, but surely this style of play isn't sustainable for long?
