I was nearly mugged in Cardiff once, I was with a couple of Clients down to watch Wales v England Rugby and we were staying in a hotel in Schooner Way, after many beers were consumed during the day we were on our way back to the hotel when these 4 ‘lads’ jumped out with 1 indicating he had something in his pocket menacingly, they asked us were we English and how much we had on us? everyone was a bit startled and I said ‘Easy, lads, I’m from Llanishen, I used to work around here and then recognized one and said ‘Don’t I know you from the City?’ He looked at me, smiled, apologised and they disappeared!
They were apparently only mugging English people! Close call as both my associates that day were right ‘Hooray Henry’ types, luckily they didn’t open their mouths.......

Of course there are places where the risk of attack is greater and since this **** government have stripped services, violent crime and all things associated with it have risen, but let's make something clear, this isn't Manilla or Bogota, we don't have children shitting in the streets then disappearing into the crowd in order to feed off some scraps before the dogs get there first. It's very safe and civilised.
I have walked/drank all over this fair city and many other and I was more in fear of getting mugged/assualted here in the 80's than I ever have been since.
In the late 70's I recall walking up the Old Kent Road to the river and no taxi would pick me up until I was on the embankment the other side but I never felt afraid or threatened even though it was 3 AM (I was a tad drunk lol)
    I. like others, have been to some nasty places and in my personal list this is way down the bottom.

If it wasn't I'd never had considered bringing my foreign wife here. And she loves the place.

You make some very interesting points there, 'Snaggs, was the 70s and 80's more violent for young men? without looking at any evidence, in my experience, i'd agree. Violence back then seemed more acceptable, even in institutions and the education system, add domestically as well.

I socialised and drank in central Cardiff throughout much of the seventies and all of the eighties, nineties and noughties - never was mugged, stabbed, robbed or even punched or kicked. i saw the odd fight, but never anything with what could be called weapons. As has been pointed out, the overall figures aren't bad and I'm a little bemused that this thread has had so many responses while the very concerning recent rises in Covid cases goes largely ignored on here.

Violent crimes and murders have actually been decreasing per capita in most countries for hundreds of years. In the UK the further back in time you go you're almost always going to a more violent time.

I have been attacked once, on my way back through the docks, but that was many years ago and i've walked through loads of times since without any problem. The media try and stir this shit up without much foundation and there seems to be enough takers out there. Cardiff is at it's unsafest after an international match, loads of pissed up, roided mongtards wanting to stove peoples heads in. That's about as bad as it gets in my experience.
Last time is was in Manchester was probably 5 years ago and their homeless and drug issue was visibly worse even then. No doubt its gotten worse since, not a pissing contest here with my reply but cardiff is pretty decent compared to other big cities in the UK (which was my point in replying)

Worked in London and felt fine walking about, same as bristol with Easton being one of the biggest dumps I've encountered in my life, but to actually walk around after dark you won't notice or encounter much bother.
