There is so much negativity about womens football, it isnt my intention to add to it, but at what level would a good level womens international side be able to compete against a mens team.
As in the title Taffs Well V England women, would this be a complete mismatch or could Taffs Well give them a good game ?
Just to try and add some context....
In 2017, the USA women's football team were the current World Champions. They played a warm-up game against a U-15 schoolboy side from Dallas. The women's team lost 2-5!
I would imagine Taffs Well would heavily outscore the England women.
I would expect the men to win. they are stronger and faster.
that doesn't mean that women's football isn't entertaining or have it's own merits. a top women's tennis player would lose massively to a mediocre mens player, same with athletics etc
The England women would likely have more technical ability but on a full size pitch with full sized goals Taffs Well would be comfortable winners. In my opinion.
^THIS^
I know the OP says that they don't want to add to the negativity and I appreciate that. However, when is this going to stop? Why does women's football constantly need to be compared to the men's game? They are separate.
...and whilst I'm on one....this feeds into the whole "why are there women commenting on the men's game?"....that's because they are all 'footballers'. The same as men and women are all tennis players, athletes, bowls players, darts, snooker ad infinitum. They don't necessarily have to 'compete' against each other.
I'd also strongly suggest that technically, the women's England team would outplay Taff's Well. Especially in the 45 mins they would play down the slope.
Edit: unless they had 11 Lucy Bronze's. She could easily compete with many professional male footballers imo.
are Taffs Well playing their under 13s or u15s?
I think it’s the fact that the media try to reinforce the message that the women’s football is at the same level as mens , something they don’t do as much with more established professional women sports such as tennis and athletics. Your argument that the female pundits are all footballers doesn’t hold true as otherwise they would have ex league 1 and 2 players as pundits as well who would be more qualified to comment on the mens professional game than the professional women and are also “footballers” - but they don’t.
I have a good friend who is an ex professional ( won’t say what sport). He’s now a commentator on TV and was told last year he would get less work on the men’s game as they have to bring in more women to provide analysis. He asked if he could then do more work on the women’s game and was told no as he had not played the women’s game professionally!
There was one euro game in the group stage on radio 5 that had a female presenter in the studio with a female commentator on the game and a female footballer providing the expert analysis - like the BBC are trying a bit too hard there!
I actually don’t think you need to be an ex pro to provide an insight either. There used to be a journalist from the football league paper on the football league highlights when it was on the Quest channel, he was very knowledgeable about all the 72 league teams and provided better comments than some of the ex pros they’ve had since .
Some interesting points, I was trying to get individuals views on an obvious hypothetical match between a team of part time men who are miles away from even lower football league standards and the finest female professional athletes of the same sport. I wrote the post not to add to negativity but out of inquisitiveness, but seemingly attracted one who wants to be offended and another who had nothing to say, but said it anyway.
Good post. I agree with a lot of this and the BBC comment. However, I'd summarise as follows:
Male/Female commentator/co-commentator for ANY sport. It shouldn't matter and they don't need to have played the game at the highest level. Equality.
Male/Female pundits for ANY sport should have played the game at the highest level e.g. Men's pro competition or women's pro competition. Equality.
Last night there was a male commentator for the Croatia v Wales match and a female pundit/co-commentator. Mixing it up seems the fairest way imo however, your mate would have a case based on the Equality Act as there would appear to be discrimination (re. not having played the women's game and this not applying to women not having played the men's game).
Further, if we take tennis as an example; mixing it up (as above) has been going on for years now and is the norm. Female umpires for men's finals etc.
I suspect that in a decade's time this will be a non-issue in football (and probably isn't for a lot of younger people anyway). I think it's also really, really important to remember just how much the women's game (football) was held back and discriminated against i.e in terms of equality of coverage and even being allowed/recognised. So I do understand that whilst it may seem that it's all happening really quickly and being 'forced' it really isn't. It's just been way too slow in catching up.
I don't think anyone's offended. Maybe vociferous!
I also see a time in the future where there will be top female footballers e.g. Lucy Bronze standard who I mentioned above, who could compete in the mens game at professional level. In tennis, for example, women's serves are now regularly +100mph at the highest level when a few decades ago that wasn't the case. But muscle mass and stamina are physical differences. Pro tennis players are now all 6ft plus. That wasn't the case a few decades ago. Women tennis players are much shorter so height is a factor. There are just differences and variables.
Go and watch a WSL match or international women's match. Technical ability is outstanding.
I financially supported womens and girls football in my town
I feel its important for women to have access to the sport if thats what they want
I watched them play not regularly I admit but felt I should show my support when I could
The standard was absolutely shocking and at times laughable but they were enjoying themselves
Cant stand women commentators though
I put that down to growing up surrounded by women whose only response to football was get that sh1t off and the classic its Cardiff city or me.
Times change though and now they are telling me about high presses and low blocks.
Its not for me
And Don Corleone was talking about tennis 😂
I do not think England women would lose to taffs well unless they get dragged into a phyiscal game. Either way who cares.
Womens football is something i'll never be interested in and i'd like it to stop amalgamiting with the mens game. But don't get why people batter it.
I agree with all of that, yet I still have a bit of an issue with women’s football.
To bring another sport into it, cricket has a mix between men and women commentators on Sky and I’d say Allison Mitchell is among the best of the regulars on Test Match Special.
Generally speaking, commentators shout more in football, than they do in tennis and cricket and there’s a woman football commentator I don’t like because of her shouty voice, but then there are men I feel the same about including Sky’s main commentator., Peter Drury.
We all watch women’s tennis almost as a separate sport from the men’s game because it’s always been like that all through our lives and I’m getting like that with cricket now - I can watch a women’s game without the need to constantly compare it the men’s game.
In football, I find it less easy to do that with the main reason being that woman goalkeepers tend to be so much smaller than men’s ones and they can be given no chance by the sort of shot a decent male keeper would save easily. Therefore, I can’t see me ever being able to watch a women’s football in the same way I do a female tennis or cricket game.
if we're going to bring in other sports then we should discuss the merits of beach volley ball.
Funnily enough, I've been thinking about height since this thread started and I was going to use basketball as a an example but as I don't know enough (well, anything really!) about the sport I didn't mention it. Now you've mentioned GKs I just had one of thosemoments
You're right with all of that. There's an Indian (I think?) female cricket commentator on SKY (?) who is really good and just baffles me with the way she reads the game but also she's just got such a gentle and relaxing voice and her comments with the men make it way more interesting. You can just tell there's a lot of respect.
I've noticed a big difference in the heights of women GKs these last few seasons. The WC was very different this time around. Several years ago Cardiff City's goalie was....very short. I think there will be recruitment and development from countries where women are taller as the pro game progresses and there's more money.
I really can't stand football TV commentators (male or female) and they spoil matches for me. Radio (and Cardiff City) commentators drive me potty now too.
I was just watching the feed from Wimbledon of one of the invitational mixed doubles matches and it wasn't until I was a few games in that I realised there wasn't any commentary. Football commentators just never, ever, STF up!
The standard of women's football has increased tenfold
I enjoy watching a match these days
It's not long ago they were all chasing the ball around like prison inmates in the yard
If a heavyweight boxer was to fight a juvenile male gorilla in a cage with both wearing boxing gloves, who would win?
