Cardiff city and european football- how would you have responded today if we sent the kids to coventry today.

And the first team to aberystwyth.

So we were in the semi final of the nathaniel mg today playing in aberystwyth in the exact same time as in coventry.

We lost on pens in aber as i am sure everyone was following!

So the mg cup is the one it is proposed we qualify for europe for if we win. So in 2 seasons time if european football was on the line would you expect them to be fielding a stronger team in that or the championship?

Or more to the point imagine what other championship teams would say if we sent the under 18s to a championship game while the first team played v tns. Yes insert jokes they would be a stronger team etc...... but seriously.

These are genuine questions and interested in peoples thoughts. I am sure now everyone will say leave the under 21s in the mg but when it actually comes to 90 minutes from europe and all that comes with that.........

Personally as much fun as European football is I am against it. You need to pick a side and we have picked the football league. It raises serious questions and whilst I think we would do okay in the uefa conference league, for me it wouldn't feel right qualifying by the back door really. Surely open to some kind of legal challenge in scenarios like today too...or whether Coventry would have to rearrange etc.

I still can't see it happening tbh.

We do similar in the league cup, we play the fringe players and U23's

but its a dilemma, 1 game away from a European adventure again, we should have enough fringe players to do the job in the mg cup, or even a mixture of both, 3 first team players in the MG cup to help the U23's

Well with the english league cup thats our choice. With the welsh league cup the games are normally the same time as the english league so we will have 2 sides playing at the same time- as we have done for the past few seasons. Nobody has cared of course and we have been pretty poor in the cup- if people think our kids will be enough to beat the cymru premier teams then the evidence currently is that wont happen and they will need first team back up.

Re coventry having to rearrange i wonder if there are any leagues anywhere in the world that would rearrange their own league games based on one of the sides playing in a competition in a totally separate footballing country.

Would be a no brainer to target the cup unless we were in the top ) but wed only have to send a few fringe players and thatd be enough to see everyone off bar Swansea, Wrexham and at a push Newport.

The scenario youve mentioned and the complications for other clubs as well as us is why it will never happen though

Hopefully it's a scenario that never happens and shouldn't be allowed to happen.

Our route to Europe should be through the system we play in.

We wouldn't be allowed to do that. Our under 23s should cope with the likes of Aberystwyth.

    Yep, thirded.

Its also worth noting, looking realistically at who is doing okay in the group stages of the Conference League, that we would be in the group stages and do okay.

But the clubs in the championship would surely be under no obligation to shift fixtures for us, so we may face up to 6 "Thursday and Saturday" fixtures.

European football would be fun but we have chosen our league.

Depends if was our first team allowed to play or the under 23s?

Eric seems pretty sure only the under 23s would be allowed to qualify so maybe only the under 23s could play in europe?

It would be proper Cardiff to be relegated to league 1 whilst qualifying for the Europa conference second rate thingy only to be knocked out in the 5th qualifiers Vs some farmers.

There are league rules stipulating that EFL teams must field their strongest team. If we fielded youngsters and sent a strong squad to another game we'd have a heavy fine. Teams have fielded weakened sides in the EFL to rest top players, but it's hard to defend sending your better players to fulfil a different fixture.

Fair enough but as james wales says it does make the whole thing even more pointless doesn't it if realistically can only be our under 21s or whoever playing in the tournament to qualify for Europe. What a waste of time. Is anyone for it I wonder?
