    The Darts 2024/2025

Is there a better run , bigger growing sport on the planet ?

They have packed arenas , afternoon session 50 odd quid evening season 90 odd quid

Players from all over the world .

Who ever is running it , come and run CCFC .

Some of the games have been brilliant , last night Kevin Doets put Michael Smith the number two seed to the sword in a phenomenal match .
The Scottish guy who fell apart because the crowd were on his case (that was painful to watch )
Players from all over the world brought to the tournament to grow interest world wide I guess.
The two Lukes yet to come.
Can Van Gerwyn trouble them .

I think Humphries will win again ...

Im loving it. Sensational game yesterday afternoon between Wessel Nijman and Cameron Carolissen. That was just brilliant. The standard these days is through the roof.

Funny thing, though - as much as I love watching the darts on TV, and especially the world championships, I wouldnt want to be there. Back in the Eighties I used to go to the internationals when Wales played England and Scotland, but the modern-day darts crowds are not for me.

I was thinking exactly the same, I wouldn’t be able to cope in an atmosphere like that. Must be my age, it’s as though it’s choreographed boisterousness, saying that I wouldn’t have been able to handle it when I was younger.
Bit of a convoluted link but Nick Kenny is the partner of a friend’s daughter, now she was going crackers in the crowd when he won his 1st round tie, checking out brilliantly with a bulls eye. He’s playing Barney tonight, great experience for him.

I would never have coped in an atmosphere like that regardless of my age, but Im not in any way opposed to it. Its just not for me.

Another plus-point with the darts is I really like almost all of Skys commentators, pundits and presenters. I can sit and watch darts for hours. Its probably my favourite TV spectator sport.

Im finding these days that I have football on in the background very regularly, but rarely sit and watch a game from start to finish (unless its a City away game). By contrast, I tend to be glued to the darts regardless of who is playing.

Last night I watched a couple of hours of the darts and about ten minutes of Luton v Derby. But luckily for me, those were the last ten minutes!

I thought I was the only one who didn't watch as much football as I used to. I got rid of my sky subscription during the summer and I haven't missed it. I've watched the odd stream, mainly from the PL, but it lasts about 5-10 minutes and I turn it off. I reckon I missed most of last summer's Euros.

I have renewed my subscription for a month to watch the darts, though and, now I'll be much less busy, I'll spend hours watching it. The only commentator that I can't get on with is Rod Studd. He's a bit of a know-all and quite condescending at times, not just in comms but on X as well. I still yearn for the days of the triumvirate of Waddell, Gwynne and Lanning, though.

Agreed about the atmosphere. Both me and Mrs HaB used to make our annual trip to Ally Pally and even went to a few exhibitions, though we haven't for several years now. We got pissed off with a Premier League night in Cardiff that became more of a Cardiff vs Swansea slagging off match between fans (I think that was the year the final was held there) and even John McDonald made an appeal to the fans to stop it (off air of course) as Sky thought Cardiff would have been a great city to host the final. Cardiff hasn't had much since, other than the annual PL night.

We went to the O2 one year to watch it and were on a table with several guys from Leicester, all of whom were making their PDC debut, having been Lakeside regulars and were big supporters of the BDO. They hated the atmosphere and didn't stay for the whole evening.

We've kept talking about going back to Ally Pally one year now the boy is old enough to enjoy it. There is a more family friendly area at the back and an afternoon session is much less raucous than the evening ones, unsurprisingly.

Anyone the darts documentary on sky.

Totally agree how addictive darts is to watch and never watch football now. Could only name a handful of players for teams like arsenal chelsea and man city combined and they are the ones i know from international football!

You saying you can hardly name many Premier League players is something I’ve been, sort of, beating myself up about for a good few seasons. I used to pride myself in the dim & distant past at recognising nigh on every top flight player & many others from other divisions. Even now I see an old photo or The Big Match revisited and I can put a name to all the faces.

I’m so glad, or relieved, to read a post like yours as the players nowadays, apart from the obvious, are just a jumble of unrecognisable names and faces, it seems that it’s not only me.

    Same here.

I also wonder if the fact that so many players seem to come and go on a frequent basis doesn't help here, either.

I know the English ones from international football. I know haaland salah and de bryne but otherwise I'm really struggling.

Up to 2008ish I could name most top flight players!

I have the same problem, I cannot pronounce 95% of the names now. I watched a game on Sky the other night and there were only 2 players in each team who were British

Did both the PDC and BDO back in the day. The darts is clearly better at PDC but the experience at The Lakeside was infinitely better. Lakeside had a real community spirit about it and much smallerthe players would be in the crowd as well after their matches. It was a bit like seeing a band at a small venue

I concur with it being a great watch and you also wouldnt see me anywhere near it in person

Gary Anderson beaten 3 nil by some bloke called Jeffrey de Graaf.

Arguably the biggest shock thus far.

I haven't seen the darts this evening, but that is quite a shock. De Graaf made a final of a Players' Championship event earlier this year but he hasn't really given any indication all season that he was capable of that. His seasonal average is ranked 98th, so he's played out of his skin this evening while Anderson has not quite hit his standards.

Good documentary on Sky, Game of Throws. Follows last seasons competition.

De Graff's finishing was excellent while Anderson's was uncharacteristically poor.

Great performance earlier in the evening from Paolo Nebrida to beat Ross Smith 3-0. Smith never got going, but Nebrida did play well.

JC scrapes through 6-5 in the deciding leg to take it 3-2.
    Phew!!

Clayton missed quite a few doubles to let Mansell back into it and then Mansell had the throw for the match!

I need a lie down already

Obviously were at a point now where the world championship sells out in half hour or whatever so the temptation is to move to a bigger venue, the o2 I guess.

But that would be a mistake imo

It seems shouting encouragement at the tele is unacceptable behaviour. Only allowed for football & MotoGP. I’m off to reread the marriage contract!

That will quite the atmosphere slightly. I hope you are joking??

Anyone else betting on the darts ?

If you want a winner ask me , it will be the opposing player to the one I bet. I could knock Luke Littler out
