Burnley's bizarre and arguably boring season (so far)

I just had to do a double take when I spotted that they've conceded just 9 goals after 30 league games. They've kept 21 clean sheets already. However, they've only scored 36, which is the second lowest of all sides currently in the top half.

In total, their games have produced 45 goals, comfortably the lowest in the Championship. Millwall come next, with 57 goals. Burnley have managed an exhilarating 10 goalless draws so far, 5 at home. 11 of their 15 wins have come with a clean sheet and they've only won twice by a margin of more than 2 goals.

Their defensive record is well on course to beat the current record of Gillingham, who hold the record of only 20 conceded by a side playing 46 league fixtures in a season, set in 1995/96. They also kept 29 clean sheets and managed 9 0-0s. They were every bit as exciting as the current Burnley side, scoring 49 league goals that season. Sunderland have the best record in this division (for a 46 game season), conceding 28 in 1998/99, though that side won 105 points and scored 91 goals!

Of course we'd rather be in Burnley's position than ours. It can't be that exciting though!

Goals 'wake up' the crowd, but I've seen some fine exciting 0-0s too.

The two games Burnley have won by more than two goals were both by 5-0.

That Gillingham team of 95/96 conceded two of the twenty goals they let in all season at Ninian Park I believe when we beat them 2-0, could we do something similar to Burnley?

Good spot there, Bob. Phil Neal had taken over by then. We also beat them 3-2 in the Auto Windscreen that season as well, making us the highest scorers against them in the whole of that season, cup games included!

They have missed 3 sitters in the first 12 minutes.

Burnley have now gone 9 games without conceding. That's incredible isn't it?

Makes the zero goals we scored up there seem quite an achievement 💪

Looking at their scoring record, it’s the five goals they scored that’s the achievement- a fair reflection on that game would have been 2-0.
