Points against the top 4 in the Championship

Throughout the 2024/25 campaign Leeds United, Burnley and Sheffield United have proved to be far and away the best three sides in the Championship, while Sunderland, although perhaps not quite so formidable, have been fourth-best by some margin.

The points the eight teams still involved in the relegation shake-up have thus far collected against the top four sides is as follows:

    8 - Hull City
    7 - Plymouth Argyle
    6 - Portsmouth
    4 - Oxford United
    4 - Stoke City
    2 - Derby County
    1 - Luton Town
    0 - Cardiff City

The Bluebirds' failure to pick up a single point against any of the top four looks certain to be a significant factor if the side gets relegated. Some Cardiff fans tend to automatically write off games against the likes of Leeds, Burnley and Sheffield United as if City never have any chance of getting points against them, but all of our relegation rivals have managed to do so.

Friday's game at Bramall Lane is City's last chance to collect any points against a top four side. While I wouldn't dismiss the idea out of hand, particularly in light of Sheffield's current form, you have to conclude it's unlikely.

Nonsense our experts think we'd have beaten Burnley, Leeds, and Sunderland at the start of the season if Riza had been in charge and we'd be safe by now

They've lost three in a row, we can help them out, no doubt.

Last seasons weaker side beat Ipswich and Southampton and drew with Leeds away opening day.

Of course the stronger squad lost 7 nil.

Incredible the difference a good Manager can make, look at Liverpool and Coventry for example, Lampard surprised me, I thought he would fail.

Not saying Bulut was a good one by the way, but he did better than just before and after him.

I don't think we're really any worse than we were last year under Bulut. A few breaks here or there and any of the clubs in the bottom half could be in our position

hull are a big counter attacking side, they have a pretty good away record and a pretty bad home record.
that probably explains why they've done quite well against the top teams, who will want to dominate the ball and set up counterattacking chances for Hull.

one of the few occasions recently that the coaching staff came away with some credit was against Hull, where we were clearly instructed to let them have the ball in their own half, only pressure in our half, defend deeper and counter attack.

You think Bulut was better than Riza? I'd beg to differ. They were both shite. Arguing over levels of shiteness is like two flies arguing over which dog turd is the tastiest.

I posted something similar the other day. We do skip above Luton in games against the current top 6, where we've amassed a huge 3 points. Oddly our best record against any half of any half comes against sides currently placed 7th to 12th.

So, well end the season with zero points from eight games against the top four. And we scored just two goals in those eight games. Thats genuinely pathetic.

We haven't beaten any of the teams in 5th to 8th either. 6 draws in 7 with West Brom to come.
