Ramsey was 16 and bad barely played for us. I know people like to kid themselves that we would have won the cup if Ramsey had been on at the start, but they are deluding themselves.
I think he would have been out muscled and kicked out of the game and our midfield overrun.
Far better to bring him on when they were tired.

The difference in quality between league 1 and the championship is huge and the gap to league 2 is even bigger. I don't necessarily think a player doing well in league 2 or at the bottom of league 1 means they're ready for top half of the championship football.

What good would it have done fielding a young team at the end of last season only for them to get hammered? Youth players have to be eased in not thrown to the wolves and humiliated as they were at Macclesfield.

If slade is here in 2 years and has had zero progress fair enough but it seems a harsh stick to beat him with after not even 2 seasons.

I always think the same he was 16 and the Pompey midfield was class! One of their centre midfielders in that game went on to play for AC Milan Ffs.

Threads like this show how fickle football fans are. Manager gets us to 7th 2 points outside the playoffs with 7 games left, under a transfer embargo and they want him sacked.

Slade is the first manager I've seen us have get the slack for everything that goes wrong but everything he does right is just luck.

Nobody is saying that he should have played 11 youth players even at the end of last season.

I believe introducing a few youngsters in and around the squad at the end of last season would have been far more beneficial than having the likes of a washed up Danny Gabbidon on the bench.

The same applies to the Shrewsbury game this year. Surely even Tandy who is probably Russell Slade himself can't defend the decision of starting the waste of space Tamas in front of Oshilaja?!

Dave Jones = 325 games and he only played 10 academy players.
Malky = 125 games
Ole = 30 games
Russell = 79 games

Slade as only been in charge for 3 cup games at Cardiff so not had much chance of playing Academy players.

During Slade's time here Pompey have been debt free and (until the last match) have probably had more season ticket holders and a bigger gate than us. They've also spent the entire time in their traditional colours. Of course there are numerous reasons we have to be more positive than there fans but we shouldn't think ending up like Pompey would be the worst thing in the world.....who was the team where (if my memory serves) the owner put the club into even more debt building a stadium that they could never fill, built it failing safety guidelines so couldn't use part of it and then got relegated to the conference? It's not Doncaster but a similar bowl.

Has Slade done a good job? Yes, if he leaves at the end of this season history will be very kind and he's recently shown he might be deserving of longer. Can we also critique him fairly? Yes.

i) He spent his whole career (about 20 years) watching players like Ashley Williams, Rickie Lambert and Jamie Vardy and the only one he has seen potential in is Doyle.
ii) Any manager that flukes the answer to their problems (such as Pilkington in front of Immers or Coquelin at Arsenal) deserves more criticism for not coming up with a proper solution than credit for finding it
iii) How many of us could see something wrong with Whitts in a middle two and Kenwynne* up front and yet it could took three windows to rectify?
iv) You have to be 22/23 to get a player on his bench as a "youth" player.

*We would have been much closer to relegation without Kenwyne's goals but a) he didn't score for two months and b) ninianboy's assertion that he was a premier league player is laughable. Stoke fans sang "he score goals Odemwingie, he scores goals up front, he scores goals Odemwingie and we swapped him for a useless @!&+$" and Odemwingie was hardly a superstar.

You cannot be serious, attending home matches became a chore. I found myself dropping off in a couple of matches. For the 1st time ever in one match I left my seat at 30 minutes and stood in the concourse for 10 minutes debating whether to continue watching or go home. I stayed but not for the quality of football.

The football has improved over the last 6 or 7 home matches and I am once again getting excited about match days again.

I am consistent in my views of Slade. I think the football we were playing this time last year was appalling. I can't believe I witnessed us taking rugby style kick offs where three players stood on the right wing and the ball was lofted up I the air towards them.

The football has improved volumes since Trollope has replaced Kevin Nicholson but I do believe that Slade showed his limitations back then.

I 100% believe that if we hadn't sold all our forwards we'd still be playing a rigid 4-4-2.

Malky had a fairly poor record for giving youth players a chance after his first season (returning to giving more criticism than praise for moves which were completely unplanned, Declan John's inclusion was because Malky had stuck with/been loyal to a left-back who was always going to be killed once they worked out he didn't have any pace let alone sought a decent reserve rather than wanting Declan to get games) however a) Nugent was not a "never going to make it" b) in his first year (the year many are comparing this season to) the squad was a mix of youth and experience and c) I couldn't ever have imagined any of the others signing Tamas when we had youth defenders desperate for a chance.

As Bob has stated to say, none of the others were given the luxury that Slade has been given where fans already disliked him but were desperate for youth to be given a chance, management wanted to rebuild bridges with the fans and there was no real danger of going up or down. Slade had two months of it at the end of the last season and maybe even up until a few weeks ago when we finally looked at making a legitimate push for 6th place.

Thank you! Pompey are still alive and kicking but Darlington moved to a new 25,000 stadium in 2003 which was immediately* restricted to 10,000 and a major factor in them going into administration, built by someone later arrested for money laundering, relegated from conference premier in 2011-2012 and dissolved at the end of that. Pompey had the fans who were willing to save the club whereas Darlington had a much smaller fan-base and City tried it's best to push fans willing to give up their time to save a club away.

*it's a more tragic story if it was immediately restricted and I am 80-90% sure that's accurate.

Yes I think he deserves another year.Trollope at his side has made a difference -in the circumstances he has done a good job off the field and not too bad a job on it.Club is becoming re-united and change at any level won't help.
My expectations for this year have been exceeded already.

I agree. We have lost only 9 league games this season only 3 teams have lost less. We have scored 51 goals only 6 teams have scored more. Slade has spent basically no money and reduced the squad to 24 from about 40. He has done a great job this season imo

I agree. I think it would have been huge if he introduced one or two youngsters at the end of last season or in the fa cup this year.

We were awful when slade came in but it was a dire situation. We've got better and better as the months have gone on.

Anyone saying the football we are playing at the moment must have thought the same under Malky because it's much more exciting than that.

I firmly believe that unless you give youngsters a chance you'll never know if their ready.
We all know kids who we thought were excellent who were never able to step up to the next level whereas average kids who seemed to step up seamlessly.

I don't believe Ryan Mason would have made an impact at many places like he did at Tottenham.

I believe Pochettino breeds belief in these youngsters enabling them to thrive.

I'm not for a minute saying we should have 11 academy players next season but I would like to see us aiming to at least bring 2 or 3 through in the next 2 to 3 years.

I have seen players like Abbruzzese, Coxe, Humphries, Patten, Tutonda, Matondo, Spence and I think players like this should be given opportunities.

Think he's done a good job in difficult circumstances, having to ship out the high earners and risk a few signings from the lower leagues that didn't quite work out. He's steadied the ship and stopped us from going into free fall that quite easily could have happened.

However, with the squad we have now I don't think he's got them playing to their full potential as of yet. Hopefully in these final few games it all clicks and we sneak in the play-offs, which would be a fantastic achievement all things considered.
