UK non gamblers are pretty rare these days what with billions spent every year on an endless list of lotteries and scratch cards alone that amounts to £500 per person annually.
As for online bookies, the boss of Bet365 stuffs several hundred million quid into her purse each year so profitable is that industry.

Sorry, just a general observation that you seem to be an expert on absolutely everything. Didn't mean to offend you, but it does seem you have a lot of anecdotal evidence to cover every subject under the sun. It's quite refreshing to have someone as genuinely interesting, intelligent, well-travelled on a football messageboard of all things. We are lucky to have you.
The ultimate will be the transdermal chip of course, without which you will not officially exist as it will encrypt all your basic personal info. It will be needed for everything from making a doctor's appointment to paying for all goods and services. No need for a passport or driving licence or insurance or CCFC season ticket - it'll all be on the chip. The "mark of the beast" comes to mind!
My reply was going to be "show me where I've proclaimed to be an expert on travelled" then I remembered I do t really care.
I live in the valleys, it's not unusual to know many addict's, I wouldn't mind betting if a few people off here asked about they'd know someone who has banned themselves from gambling, it's not some mega rare thing that hardly occurs.
I get ‘borrow off a mate’, that the scenario has been around for centuries, the other things I have no clue about but they seem like the type of things that we’ve alluded to in this thread, they’re stealthily putting people in debt rather than the cash method that’s also been around for centuries, ‘when you’re spent up, go home, don’t put yourself in deeper water’, especially when you had a few pints and caution is thrown to the wind.........until you check your balance!!!! Perhaps you, again, haven’t paid enough attention to what’s been posted i.e. cash as opposed to other means of paying, which is getting folk into deep shite on card only gambling sites, card only takeaway services, using your card on evenings out etc.
It will help with compulsive gambling and stop people chasing their losses by instantly getting their hands on cash they havent got.
But, if people really want to gamble they will find a way, even through a credit card, it will just take a couple of days online to get the money from the credit card into your bank. Or draw cash out on a credit card to gamble in the shop, or deposit into your bank manually but then your talking hundreds rather than thousands in one go.
Also, when your chasing online its all about the moment "One more spin, one more bet and ill get my money back", if you have to wait 24 / 48 hours then its going to help massively id say. Gives you a period of reflection.
Either way, I dont think by banning credit cards is going to be the definitive answer, but it will certainly go a long way to helping some compulsive gamblers.
I just wish theyd banned them 5-10 years ago
I read your original post yes, and like I've said its not (for everyone) that straightforward.
It doesn't really matter what ones you know or don't, they are all opinions that make the temptation of spending your limit and leaving all that much harder.
Wasn't the original post about helping irresponsible not gamble? The ideal scenario you paint is lovely, but unfortunately there are too many irresponsible people out there who have too much temptation in front of them.
Also, you get borrowing off a mate as it's been around yonks.. but don't seem to see it as a problem like the other things I mentioned..they all put you in debt.
They should treat the gambling industry like they did the tobacco industry and ban advertising, same for the drinks industry.

A good decision re: credit card because they cant gamble whats not theirs, but plenty of people gamble without getting addicted so the government need to be careful how much they clamp down on the gambling industry.
Would people who enjoy a drink without being addicted like it if all sorts of restrictions were put on them just because some people are alcoholics?
And you’ve cracked it at last. Withdraw the cash from the hole in the wall for f*ck all, take said cash out with you, whether to the bookies, pub, club etc, leave card at home, when the cash is gone retire gracefully, having spent what you could afford, no temptation whatsoever to keep flashing the card which, as alluded to by other posters, may result in you having a rude awakening when next checking your balance. Even the most sensible of people can get carried away when they aren’t emptying their wallet of notes, credit and debit cards are faceless plastic and that’s exactly what the leeches who are bleeding people want.
