"Welsh International Neil Eardley.." says the commentator..

Name dropped as one of the players missing tonight for Burton as they face Villa in the cup.

When did he last play for Wales must be 10 years? Why do they do this? Is it to make players appear better than they are?

He just did some wikipedia research to throw some stats and info about the Burton players during the match. He isn't wrong to be fair.

Right, but what is the point of mentioning him as a Welsh International if he hasn't played for probably 10 years and I'd doubt he played more than a handful of games either.
It's a weird thing the press do
Name some 29 year old that played 3 5imes for England u21 "and its England u21 International Bob Jones.."

Given that international football is the pinnacle of a player's career (usually), it's understandable. A darts player (as an example) in the same situation is announced as former xxx champion, even if he won it 20 years ago.
