It's difficult to make any real comment without knowing how old the car is, and how many miles it has done. If it's done a fair few, then perhaps your mate should have expected something like this to need doing, That said, if I had paid over ten grand for a car, I wouldn't expect the clutch to fail, and I'd certainly expect at least some compromise from the selling garage. My advice is to get it done by Mazda, (or an independent Mazda specialist), and get them to check the rest of the car over, while they're at it.
