Those Championship seasons produced some really intense derby games. It had been a while since we'd faced each other at that level and both clubs were always in the promotion frame. I recall the 2-1 win at the CCS when Chopra netted with the last kick. There hasn't been a bigger derby game with so much at stake as that game. Both sides were on the up, they won promotion before us, which hurt us. We won the first top flight derby.

Since then it's been one way traffic. We go into the derby expecting to lose, mainly as it is Swansea's cup final and means more to them than us. We've scored 1 goal in the last 8 derbies, losing 6 of the last 8 and conceding 15 goals.

The atmosphere at home has never matched the Chopra game, even during the match.

I remember going to meet friends in a pub on the outskirts of Cardiff in 2019 when we lost 1-0 there. None of us bothered watching the second half.

That first away trip into the Liberty was lively, thousands of them were outside waiting for the buses with flares (trousers and the fireball things), and a huge police presence to keep fans apart they were very excited.

Quite different from the early 80s when there was free travel when you got off the train all you saw were Cardiff fans, things certainly changed over the decades.

It's definitely fading now, maybe a good win will bring some feeling back for us Cardiff fans.

The difference is that it's the next two games and he talks about Rotherham a six-pointer first, then the next game which is a local derby. As you said about Swansea he was asked about it.

It's important to us, mostly to shut their gobby fans up, but it's their whole season in two games for them, the Manager's sacking probably rides on them getting a win or a loss.

Despite Cardiff being a lot bigger and its catchment area we have failed big time to put clear water between us and them

As for it being their game of the season it's also our game of the season , in terms of intensity and attendance

But Swansea fans are the same as us really . When the game is over the focus switches to the next game wether they are playing Rotherham or we are playing Coventry .

As a club, and as a fanbase to a slightly lesser degree, I am certain that Swansea City care more about the South Wales derby than Cardiff City do. I don't know why that is, and I don't know why it is now the case when it didn't used to be, but I think it's definitely gone that way. Maybe it's misplaced arrogance of some sort or perhaps it's collective embarrassment, I don't know.

I think you implied it wasn't much different, but that's subjective.

The reason is, we are the Capital City and have had much greater funding as a City over the years, they also wanted to be the Capital of Wales, so there is a general hatred.

The other obvious reason is that they don't have any other rivals, other than perhaps Llanelli and Carmarthen on the other side of them, and they will never play them, we have had rivalries with Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, and Newport County in my lifetime, so it's very different really. They only hate us, we hate loads of teams.

I think all this business about funding is bollocks. I've never spoken to a single Swansea City fan who thinks along those lines. Indeed, I've never met a single Swansea fan who hates the city of Cardiff, but plenty can't stand Cardiff City.

The sporting rivalries may be a factor, but the truth is the so-called rivalry between Cardiff and Newport lasted a couple of seasons in the Eighties when crowds were tiny, a rivalry with Bristol Rovers is fiction, while the rivalry with Bristol City has significantly diminished since the Seventies - Swansea have consistently been far bigger rivals since the Eighties. Indeed, the Bristol City game has rarely attracted an above-average crowd during the last couple of decades, while any game against Swansea normally attracts the biggest crowd of the season.
