I wonder if Cooke himself might be a bit reluctant to give up the gloves mind, considering it took him so long to get them off Wallace in the first place.

Just had a Google of Mark Wallace to double check when cooke actually got the gloves. I hadn't actually realised they were so close in age, Wallace 41, Cooke 37. We did quite well as a club to keep Cooke as a specialist batsman for all those years, must've been a few counties sniffing around him with the offer of playing wicketkeeper.
You might be right about Cooke not wanting to give up the gloves as I’m not seeing a decline in his standards, I’m just thinking of the strain it must be putting on his body.

When Cooke first came into the team, I thought he was just a slogger, but I soon saw that wasn’t the case, he’s a proper batsman who could go in much higher up the order and seems better suited to opening than some of those we’ve tried in that position.

Big game this afternoon with a danger of complacency from Glamorgan after Sussex stunk the place out in last night’s televised game with Hampshire.
