Whilst I'm broadly in favour of the new limit, the process of implementation has been arse over tit. Rather than an imposition and a late amendment to allow councils to apply for exemptions, it could easily have been the reverse, which I think people would be much more accepting of.
If they given councils powers to install 20 limits in certain areas, subject to local consultation, there would be much more engagement and overall acceptance, whilst maintaining more 30 limits on more arterial routes.
They haven't though, which could be damaging to them at the ballot box.
Maybe though, it will encourage more people to read manifestos before choosing who to vote for.
