Page is totally clueless. Had you asked any one of us on here how Gibralter would set up and the answer would be everyone behind the ball, defend deep and hope to keep the opposition out. Yet time and again we tried to play through their red wall. Not once did a full back go on an overlapping run to get in behind their defence and we kept doing the same thing over and over. I've also never seen him change tactics during a game to exploit a weakness in the opposition. The only thing he does is swap personal which often, as others have mentioned, results in square pegs in round holes.
It's been a series of failures from Page since we qualified for the world cup. How many more are we going to have to endure before the FAW realise they need to employ a proper manager.
I agree with this to a certain extent and if I was Rob Page I would be spinning similar and not saying things like the result is not acceptable.
The brutal truth though is that the manager is completely out if his depth and doesn't seem to know which players are good and how to get the best out of them.
Bit of an over reaction IMO. Not defending Page as I think hes out of his depth, but im not going to crucify him for last night, thats nothing to do with tactics, its the attitude and desire of the players.
Players are not robots, some of them have had a long hard season and the game was a typical end of season dead rubber affair that no-one really wanted to be involved in. What is the point of these "friendlies" if youre not involved in the Euros?
I too was thinking it was a pointless friendly but actually on reflection it's fantastic for Gibraltar, you could see how happy they were at the end and the effort they put in.
Also for us and Page it's an insight into how poor our reserves are. I'd personally expect more from some players that don't often get a chance to represent their country. I expect for the likes of James, Moore, Johnson etc it was a why are we here? For some of the others however, a great opportunity missed surely.
I won't dig individual players out as all were bad, but one lad walked about with the ball at his feet, then gave the ball away lazily, then fouled lazily in the space of a couple of minutes. That's possibly his debut or one of his first few caps anyway. Just pointless being there if that's the attitude.
It is of course Page's job to win against Gibraltar, there's no excuses for that, this won't be a reason to sack him and of course he won't be going anywhere soon but it's another mark against him that he could probably do without.
Why is everyone getting so upset about this?
In a match that absolutely no one cares about we fielded a very young team which was the right thing to do.
Even if we’d lost I wouldn’t have been that bothered.
I’m just glad that lots of youngsters got a run out and we got a chance to see them.
The average age of our starting XI last night was 25.
Only Koumas and Crew (who had a debut to forget) could be classed as very young.
I agree that last night was a pointless exercise and nobody wanted to be there, and if it was against, say, Latvia or Moldova, I wouldn't care either.
But even a half-arsed second string side should be able to score at least one goal against a team 203rd in the world.
Call Rob last night:
Rob: We have Dai on the line. Hello, Dai.
Dai: Thanks...er yeah. Just want to say it's an absolute disgrace. I mean, we're playing probably the weakest side in world football and we can't do better than a draw.
Rob: It was a poor result.
Dai: Poor result! Poor result! It's absolutely scandalous. The manager has lost the plot completely, he's got to go. I know we've never set the world alight over the years on the international stage but I can't remember things being this bad. It's the end for us. The absolute end. I can't see us ever recovering from a setback like this. We're a complete laughing stock.
Rob: Look Dai. I know it seems bad now but there is still a long way to go. I can't see us qualifying for the World Cup in 2026 but hopefully things will improve.
Dai: I never expected for a moment we would qualify. I don't mind that so much. We're not good enough. But listen, to fail to beat a team like Wales is a different matter. It's a bitter blow for everyone here on the rock.
You’d have thought that the Scots had a decent squad involved as well given that they’ve qualified. No excuses though and I don’t hold with the view of some that it was good experience for the younger element to be involved at ‘this level’. It was the level of non league, even the training camp was like an end of term beano expecting a piss easy fixture I’d imagine.
What really annoys me is how Page keeps saying we’re a team in transition! He keeps saying it over and over. Exactly what are we transitioning from ? Bale retired before the Euro campaign
Nearly as poor as England tonight.![]()
We were saying this the other night, no idea where this narrative has come from. And he uses it to defend himself at every corner.
The vast majority of our usual squad has at least 30 caps each. Most have a lot more. I think it's only Jordan James of our regular starters that has less.
I think the last time you could say we were in a genuine transition was after 2018 when the core of the Euros squad either retired or were in their twilight. That was 6 years ago!!
