Tap beer as my memory tells me was Allbright, PA (Welsh Brewers), Hancock, Brains Dark and SA.

Lager Hemeling, Tuborg and Tennants Extra.

Cider, Strongbow and Old English.

Special mention to the promotion night Brains put on for Hurlimanns. Great night but the amount of near marriage break ups and spike in domestic abuse (women towards their husbands) ensured the rep was informed it wasn't going on the bar full time.

I don't know anyone my age (28) or below who drinks cocktails regularly, if at all. Have you possibly seen a few people do this and decide an entire demographic must do the same?




Lager and IPA are the main choices of the 20somethings. Though Guinness has had a massive renaissance in the last few years.

yeah IPA is everywhere these days, the problem is most of it is utterly shite, it's actually harder to get a decent pint of beer in a lot of places than back when everywhere sold lager.
they all use far too much citrus hops, it tastes like drinking a pint of grapefruit juice

Never saw Brains when I was growing up (gwent valleys).

Started off (@15) on Lager n Lime…”progressed” to Lager with a dash, and then Lager ‘straight’ !

Now like a Guinness or Cider when I’m out, and little bottles of lagers, and red wine, when I’m in the ‘owse.

Tennant's Super - its alcohol volume ranged from 7.5% to 9%.
I didn't like the taste but it certainly carried a kick!

I can pin my first experience of beer (as opposed to shandy) down to an exact day - the day of the Investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales in 1969. My Dad won a bottle of Mackeson at the fete held at Pentrebane school and handed it to me with the words “have your first taste of beer”. No doubt he hoped it would put me off beer for life - it was awful, but it only put the thirteen and a half years old me off it for a couple of years.

I had to have something to take away the taste of the beer though and, for reasons I cannot begin to fathom now, my first regular pint was Courage IPA with a dash of lime in the Quarry.

Once I discovered Brains beers though I soon went down the route a few others on here did as I graduated on to Dark, then SA for a short while and then Bitter which was my regular drink for about forty years until I had to go on Warfarin. Now, my attitude is Ill have a beer if and when I fancy one, but, in truth, I’m near as damnit tea total - I had my last beer about a year ago, a can of Boddingtons (always liked pints like that, Tetleys, Fullers, Felinfoel etc) which I must admit I was pretty disappointed with.

At that time I think the abv was 5% (ish), that and the Tuborg on draught was the loopers choice of lager.

Tennants 'super', absolutely lethal stuff, tasted like petrol, probably could've been used as a tool for euthanasia.

At the Cowbridge road end of Wyndham Crescent at the entrance to what is now a car park was a pub I think it was called the Crown. There was a sliding window near the door to the rear bar. Barman couldn’t even see your face. Brains bitter was the only drink I could think of

SA / Brains bitter was my first pint of choice. I’m 52.
Discovered whisky when I turned 50.

I had the odd pint of bitter as a 16/17 year old in pubs in north Cheshire and south Manchester - but didn't have a regular brew until I moved to Bristol to go to college when I was 18.

Then it was 6X or Courage Best/Directors.

Until the great Courage brewery strike of 1980 when it was Felinfoel Double Dragon brought over the bridge to keep the Courage pubs open. It was only later that I realised I was helping to break a strike with every pint. My shame lasted years!

Always bitter for me. Something not right about lager drinking - unless it is just to cool down with fizzy piss on a hot day, and even then best to do it with the glass hidden in a paper bag.

I have just turned 65. Still drink bitter on some nights out - but more wine or whiskey these days.

Had a Friday afternoon/evening on Hurlimanns before a City game early 90s. Went for a lie down in the Bob Bank and playing football the day after was a shit show.

Never again.
