Nice to see any of our teams top of the league 👍

Goals have dried up somewhat for the under 21s in recent games, wonder if Luke Pierce will feature most weeks in the New Year?

Highlights of Friday’s under 21 game at Colchester, really good goal to win it by Cody Twose.

Good goal yes. My eldest doesn't like short corners but the odd one can catch sides out. Not saying Twose would've been given that much space at a higher level but no harm in trying to catch opponents off guard now and again.

I know you're not a big fan of loans but I'd expect some of the under-21s to be going out in January if there's interest. With players coming back from injury we had Kpakio, Giles and Mafico on the bench on Friday, the squad is bigger than it needs to be so it'd be a good time to send a couple out (or promote a couple more to the first team squad if they're ready, of course).

Twose has been quietly impressive this season. playing in a deeper role which I would have said didn't suit him beforehand. I thought he did pretty well when he came on in that League Cup game against Southampton - he was caught out a bit with the fourth goal, but was a little unlucky really and he showed his shooting ability with an effort which I didn't think the keeper was reaching if it had been a yard more central.

It'd be a bit disappointing to see the under 21 side broken up to an extent by loan moves next month, but, if someone came in for someone like Twose, you'd have to say yes to the offer - in saying that, I'm not convinced that more offers from Soth Wales based Welsh Premier teams or Weston Super Mare should be accpeted because I'd argue that most, if not all, of the regulars in the under 21 team have proved they're better than that level now.

The issue for me is that if all the regulars have proved they're better than Welsh Premier League level then how could they not beat Aberystwyth (who are bottom)? They got out of jail against Cardiff Met too so we might be fooling ourselves if we think it's a squad full of National League players or better already. I assume the plan was to send Tom Davies out on loan at the start of the season along with the other fringe squad members but he's still here. His, and the team's, form has been good so I'd expect some interest in January but we'll see.

That's not a dig at our youngsters, by the way. I was looking at some EFL Trophy results recently and was surprised by how the Premier League under-21 teams had done. I don't know enough about how seriously they take it to generalise too much but the night I saw had Man Utd losing 4-1 at Huddersfield, Arsenal 3-0 at Colchester, Villa 3-0 at Barrow and Man City (who are top of the U-21 Premier League) 5-0 at Lincoln. Chelsea weren't playing that night but they'd already been eliminated from the competition. Maybe I was reading too much into one night's results but it suggested a massive gulf between youth football and the men's game.

The under 21s “loss” at Aberystwyth was by a penalty shoot out and the goal which the home side scored was from another penalty that was not earned in the slightest, it was a once in a lifetime incident that led to a lesson being learned by all of those in blue. Is there a single City player who went on to make a single Championship appearance for us after being loaned out to a Welsh Prem team or Weston Super Mare? I dare say there is somewhere along the line, but I can’t think of one at the moment.

As I said, I’ve no objection to a worthwhile loan in January for members of the under 21 team, but I feel anything below National League level would be counterproductive in all but the very odd exception.

I'm just saying that securing National League (or better) loans for players relies on teams at that level feeling they're going to come in and add something to their teams, it's not down to us saying 'a move to Forest Green will suit X or Y perfectly'. You were suggesting the regulars have all proved themselves to be level 5 players or better, I'm not so sure about that.

I'm not going to get into a debate about when a loan move serves no purpose, that's complex. Sam Bowen went to Barry before playing in the Championship for us. A loan move to Weston didn't seem to do Ollie Watkins any harm, Reindorf was at a lower level than that with Kettering last season. With such a large u-21 squad at present I'd have thought it makes sense to be sending some out somewhere so they're all getting regular football but we'll see how that goes in January.

Tonight's Youth Cup tie with Chesterfield is being streamed on You Tube for anyone not going along to watch it live. The club is, justifiably, getting slagged off for all manner of things currently, but they deserve so much credit for going much further than most other teams by making it possible for so many supporters to watch games below first team level free of charge.

That's true. My Bristol City supporting friends would love to be able to watch live streams of their u21s.

I wonder if it makes it easier for big clubs to scout out players? but I suppose they'd be doing that anyway

Maybe, but as you said, they've probably got good scouting networks regularly watching games in person.

Interested to see if the Youth Cup eligible players in the under 21s are considered for tonight, they have been in past years.

Re: The Bluebirds Academy and DVP thread...

Bit of a mixture, think they may be sticking to an under 18 team.

There is a live stream on YouTube. 1 nil
    To City half time.

Re: The Bluebirds Academy and DVP thread...

Chesterfield stuck everyone behind the ball and it took City a long time to create anything, but they got on top in the last fifteen minutes or so of the first half and Dan Ola headed us in front around the forty minute mark. Chesterfield looking to utilise their height advantage at corners and have just hit the crossbar from a corner.

Re: The Bluebirds Academy and DVP thread...

Ola makes it 2-0 with a penalty - bit of a dodgy decision I thought.

Re: The Bluebirds Academy and DVP thread...

3-1, Barton restores Citys two goal lead, only for Chesterfield to immediately make it 3-2.

  20. #4670

Re: The Bluebirds Academy and DVP thread...

Finished 3-2, City did enough to win, but I’d say Chesterfield will wonder about their first half policy because they were a threat when they came out and attacked more after the break.

City under 18s 1-0 up at half time against Watford with Lennon Talbot scoring.

Re: The Bluebirds Academy and DVP thread...

Two Mannie Barton goals has us 3-0 up going into the last fifteen minutes.

It's Cardiff v Bristol City in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup, hopefully they won't enjoy watching the stream of that.

One of them has seen us beat them at every senior and u21 match he's been to in about 3 years. I'll suggest he goes along in person.
