Some of Tom James' friends/family were sat behind me that day and they were (rightly) going nuts when he came on. He's a solid enough career but part of that odd batch of Welsh players just after the Bale/Ramsey generation that never really hit the heights expected of them and left us with squads with big age gaps
Wales and City both. I don't remember Tom really being on Wales' radar but lads like O'Sullivan, Wharton, Abbruzzese and Coxe were but never kicked on, as with most of our youngsters in that period.
It was Declan John who played against Chelsea that day, yes. He's ended up with seven caps but fits into the category of player you're talking about. He was still part of the Wales u-21 squad in 2015. They had a really good 3-1 win here against Bulgaria, with O'Sullivan and Yorwerth getting the goals, and it looked like a new generation of Welsh talent might be coming through but they flattered to deceive overall.

'Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him'. Bringing Lazarus of Bethany back to life was one of Jesus's most notable achievements (apparently, his first mission was to get a decent 45 minutes out of Kanga of Ivory Coast but even he baulked at that one) and it came to mind as Eli King reappeared in the Stevenage matchday squad this week. Actually, I'm not going any further with the Lazarus stuff as I'd have to compare Alex Revell to Jesus at some point although the fact that Stevenage had to go to the Orient in midweek means there might have been some mileage in it.
Anyway, two substitute appearances for Eli this week and two wins. A lively cameo from him yesterday as Stevenage got an injury time winner at Barnsley, he had a long range shot tipped over then was involved in the build-up for the only goal of the game. Encouraging signs, hopefully Eli can kick start his season now. Wrexham away for Stevenage next up.
No such luck for our other loaned out players this weekend. Another 90 minutes for Kieron Evans but Newport continue to slip towards the trap door in League 2 after a 2-1 home loss to Swindon. Tom Davies got 90 minutes at left back after his recent transfer to Newport. Judging by how our u-21s have fallen apart since his departure he must've been in good form this season, I'll keep an eye on his progress there.
I'll also keep an eye on Malachi Fagan-Walcott as his team bid to become York's biggest success story since The Redskins. He scored in midweek against Oldham, who had one of our many young keepers, Jake Dennis, on the bench. Another keeper, Joe Thomas, let in three as Yate Town lost at home. Winger Baylin Johnson came on for Maidstone in their home loss to Worthing and it was a bad day for Exeter too yesterday as a terrible ten minutes before half time saw them go 3-0 down. Joel Colwill was subbed after 64 minutes and it finished 3-1.

Exeter lost 2-6 to Orient tonight. Colwill came on as a sub on 46 minutes
Great win for Stevenage, Eli King got 81 minutes. They play Exeter on Saturday.
Another 90 minutes for Kieron Evans tonight as Newport got a 1-1 draw at Salford. He gave away the penalty for Salford's equaliser but it's a decent point for them. Three crucial home games coming up for Newport in the next fortnight;18th placed Barrow on Saturday, bottom placed Morecambe on Tuesday then 23rd placed Carlisle the following Tuesday.
Kadeem Harris is at Carlisle, by the way, back from Ukraine (he was playing there, not fighting for Putin) and Turkey.

Exeter have conceded seven goals in the first half of the two home games they've played since Joel Colwill signed for them. They were 4-0 down to Leyton Orient after forty five minutes last night when Joel was introduced and at least he played a part in them drawing the second half 2-2.
Watched quite a bit of the Newport game, Keiron Evans was a bit unlucky with the penalty, but seems to be settling into his defensive midfield role - still don't think it's a position where you get the best our of him, but they've got a couple of lively ingers who he'd struggle to displace. Tom Davies started as well and gave a six out of ten type performance, while Cameron Antwi came on as a sub.
An interview with Eli King here after last night's win for Stevenage. He talks of a recent injury towards the end of it which I was unaware of, Riza didn't mention it when he talked about him being out of the squad there recently. Whatever problems Eli has had, it looks like he's rapidly putting them behind him. The local paper gave him 9/10 last night and said he was a clear and obvious man of the match. Great credit to him, he speaks well here too.

A quick round-up of how our loaned out players have got on this weekend.
Handballs are making more headlines than corduroy pillows this week (I'm having to borrow jokes today due to time pressure) as both Eli King and Kion Etete gave away penalties. King's handball was in the first minute of his game to give Exeter a 1-0 lead but at least that gave him the chance for redemption. He took that chance by pressing an Exeter defender into a mistake ten minutes later, moving the ball on and then calmly finishing when the return pass came to him. Stevenage won 4-1 to round off an excellent week for them, Eli had another good game and his season is finally moving through the gears. Joel Colwill's is stuck in reverse for now, he came off the bench in the second half as Exeter's terrible run continues.
Kion Etete gave away his penalty in the last minute of Bolton's game at Reading with the score at 0-0. My eyes aren't what they were but what seemed to happen was that Kion went to head away a weak free kick but missed it by so much that it hit his arm instead. Surely not? Maybe Pearcey can clear that up for us. Reading scored and won 1-0.
Kieron Evans was on the bench for Newport today as he was suffering from a knock. He came on in the second half and Newport scored through an own goal for a vital 1-0 win. Kieron had to go back off in injury time and is now a doubt for Newport's six-pointer with Morecambe in the week. Poor Tom Davies. Having secured a permanent move to Newport recently and got into the starting line-up he pulled his hamstring on Tuesday and is out for the season.
Ryan Wintle came on for Millwall in their third win in a row today to round off the EFL action. In the non-leagues, Jake Dennis was on the bench for Oldham, Joe Thomas was in goal for Yate as they won 4-1 at Cribbs (didn't Johnny Marr used to play for them?) and Baylin Johnson started for Maidstone, but missed a good chance, as they won 1-0 at home to Torquay in front of a crowd of over 3,000. The National League South is very competitive. Maidstone are second, one of four teams on 55 points with Torquay just three points behind.
Kortrijk play tomorrow. Ryotaro Tsunoda has a 'minor knock' (according to Tranfermarkt) which has caused him to miss the last two games. That guy deserves some luck. Saying that, he didn't play for us today so I guess he can count his blessings for that.
I'm not sure what thread this belongs in but as it involves Kieron Evans I'll put it here. Kieron is out for over for a month with a calf injury so Newport moved in for another player to bolster the midfield just before the deadline closed - Keenan Patten. Keenan was with us from a very young age until he was released in 2022, he's nearly 24 now and it's nice to see him finally get a shot at league football. He's been playing well for Barry and won a Welsh League player of the month award earlier in the season.
His brother Robbie was here too but suffered from injuries, I think there was another brother as well. TOBW knows more than me about them, I seem to remember him knowing their dad.

There was another, older, Patten brother on Citys books as well (Ryan?) - I thought Keenan had a chance of making it with us, so its not a total shock to see him getting a chance with County.
Think Ill have a look at tonights County game, a win would make a relegation battle a lot less likely for them.

Keenan Patten wasn't in the Newport squad last night as they scraped a very important win over a Morecambe team which deserved at least a point on the balance of play. Cameron Antwi started for County and David Tutonda played left wing back for Morecambe.
Who do people fancy for the coveted Loan-watch player of the season award?
It looked like Joel Colwill had it in the bag - but Exeter look like they're in a real mess, so a good opportunity for someone else to capitalise.
Would Fagan-Walcott be eligible?
