    Losing by 7 or more

I'm sure we're all after some stats at this point.....

This is the 18th time in our history we've conceded 7 or more in a league or cup game. It's our first defeat by 7 goals or more since Preston beat us 9-0 in 1966. It's the last time we've conceded 7 since that Cambridge game at home in 1994 and the last time we've done so away from home since Luton in 1978.

Luton and Preston lead the way with 3 victories of 7 goals or more against us. Wolves have managed it twice.

    The full honours board.....

    1 Feb 2025 Leeds United A L 0-7
    30 Apr 1994 Cambridge United H L 2-7
    16 Sep 1978 Luton Town A L 1-7
    15 Oct 1966 Plymouth Argyle A L 1-7
    21 Sep 1966 Wolverhampton Wanderers A L 1-7
    7 May 1966 Preston North End A L 0-9
    28 Apr 1962 Everton A L 3-8
    3 Sep 1955 Wolverhampton Wanderers H L 1-9
    1 Sep 1954 Preston North End A L 1-7
    6 Mar 1937 Brighton and Hove Albion A L 2-7
    20 Feb 1937 Southend United A L 1-8
    2 Jan 1937 Luton Town A L 1-8
    1 Apr 1933 Brentford A L 3-7
    29 Oct 1932 Luton Town A L 1-8

We went. We got battered at the league leaders. We came home.

    Next week is another day.

11-2 in 1926. If we can put this behind us and win the FA Cup next season then I'll excuse today's result.

So, the last time Cardiff City had a heavier defeat than today was in May 1966, a couple of months before England won the World Cup.

When you consider some of the dreadful teams we’ve had since then, that’s quite incredible.

I posted in the match thread that we never conceded more than 4 in a Premier League game.

I agree it's an incredible scoreline. A one-off. The fact it's only the second 7-0 defeat in our history shows how much of a rarity it is. These things happen. Man Utd shipped 7 at Anfield. I remember Liverpool conceded 7 at Villa. I'd be more tempted to call it a freak result more than incredible.

Thank you Eric. I really needed that. But we press on. Onwards and upwards.

Am I missing something here Eric? I can think of a six and three fives we conceded, all at home, in the Premier League without needing to look it up.

Liverpool beat us 6-3. At least that side had a go and were beaten by World Class players not Dan James and Joe Rodon.

Apologies, I meant away from home. I had posted so in the match thread but didn't repeat that tiny, but essential bit of info here!

I don’t think it can be classified as a freak result. I’d say the 5-0 defeat at Burnley in August was more like a freak result as that scoreline definitely flattered the Clarets - they had four shots on target and won 5-0.

By all accounts, Leeds could comfortably have hit double figures yesterday. It wasn’t one of those games where everything they hit went in.

The Sky summariser at the end of match report said it was one of the most one-sided matches he'd ever reported on.

I was classifying it as a freak result as I've never known us lose by 7 goals before. These things don't happen often at all. I gave up listening to the game at 2-0 down and did something useful, hopefully my new socks will develop holes at a slower rate, but it appears that the result didn't flatter Leeds at all and was something of a dreadful day at the office.

I know you don't care for xG in the slightest, I'm not that bothered by it in terms of using it as a valuable statistic, but I notice that yesterday Leeds's xG was 4.9, their highest of the season by a distance. It's also our worst for goals against since stats for xG have been available for us since 2018/19. This can only add to the fact that we were truly woeful yesterday. Our last 3 games against Leeds have resulted in 3 of our worst xG against since 2018, possibly the top 3 (I wasn't counting), but 3 of the top 5. By coincidence, our last 3 games against Leeds since the 2-2 draw last season have all been incredibly one-sided and the general feeling has been that Leeds could have scored more.

Yesterday was bad. Freakishly bad. We won't be as bad again this season, or for a good while.
