Merthyr Town FC - A470 Derby

With Merthyr Town now 9 points at the top of the league (Totton lost yesterday). They could be on course to promotion to the National South (where Newport were 15 years ago). Could they do what Newport did and get promotions to the EFL. As a City fan and someone who also watches Merthyr (my local team), like many other City fans from the Valleys, it could be strange. Imagine if we were to play in the League Cup (the A470 derby?), be kind of bonkers.

We used to meet in the Welsh league, i'm sure they beat us at Ninian Park, late eighties? Dai Webley, Ceri Williams etc, they were probably better than us for a short while.

    No.

They won't get any near the football league.

Good to see them having some success and they play more than decent football. National League South / North will be their plateau.

They beat us 4-1 at Ninian Park if I remember rightly, they were a good team in the equivalent of the National League for a while and used to get crowds of up to 2,000 I think. Back then, there was a bloke (Michael REddy?) who bankrolled them I seem to remember and I would have thought they’d need someone similar if they were to make the EFL.

    It was 1990 Bob.

They murdered City on the night.

The train journey back to Merthyr Vale was a long one.

The owner was John Reddy who put cash in. They were a very good side. Think they finished fourth in what is now the national league.

Drew a friendly match with Red Star Belgrade and I watched Robert Prosinecki at Penydarren Park. That season they went on to win the European Cup (Red Star not Merthyr).

I Must have gone up to watch them play four or five times in the Conference as it was known then. Pretty sure I saw them beat Colchester and draw with what was then a very good Barnet team.

I agree, but apparently it's all about "the dream" of league football.

They're doing great currently and it's good news for the club and their town. Merthyr needs a decent football club and their fans have done great work in the past to keep them going. Also as a 'trust/fan owned' club, the owners are entitled to chase any dream they want.

A regular up there tells me they had 1500 in the ground yesterday which again is great news, problem being when they don't do so great that'll drop quire quickly.

In the 90s when they had decent crowds and a cash injection they didn't make the league, they couldn't sustain the costs I believe. They're not in the position to make a push for league unless someone puts money in and no one dould fo that if they don't have control of the club.

Interestingly, Wrexham were fan owned and were piissing in the sink until Rob and Deadpools millions dold them the 'dream'.

1500+ there yesterday. It was Non league day.

They play some great stuff for the level but were trying to walk it into the net like Wengers Arsenal. Ironically equalised on the hour when a centre half smashed it in from 30 yards.

I was one of the 1500 yesterday (before going to the Wales game in the evening). I've been a few times when City aren't at home. It's a very enjoyable afternoon. My son lives in Aberfan. We meet in the Winchester for a couple of beers then walk up the hill to PenY Darren Park. Only 10 to get in. Much better food (and cheaper) than at City. Much better (and cheaper) beer than at City. Stand or sit where you want, beer in hand to watch some decent football.

It's very tempting not to renew my City season ticket and go to the odd City game and more Merthyr games.

the NLS is a serious league, the money being spent is not loose change, I know some of the wages Bath City and Salisbury are paying, being a fan owned team ( like Bath city ) means they cant compete with the bigger spenders

I believe so. He must be in debt to some serious people to try and do what he did so soon after Dubai. F-ing moron.

Off the top of my head but I can't think smuggling drugs into Bali is a great idea.

Any firing squad would need a bazooka for his sized head mind.

I think Merthyr’s future depends entirely on whether they can hold onto Paul Michael. Personally I think his coaching & management is good enough for a L2 or National League side. His communication skills and clarity of what he wants / expects are excellent. I hope Merthyr hang onto him and he continues to take them higher, if not he deserves a shot at a higher level.
