    Electric Chargers

Theyre so much more expensive than charging at home but what I dont understand is why the higher voltage ones are a higher rate when they can get through more cars in a day

On a slow charge, the cars taking up that spot most of the day

The manufacturer of BYD electric cars claim they have developed their charging system to the point where it now takes the same amount of time as filling your car with petrol.

I wouldn't have an electric car. Far too dangerous.

and distance limited - it won't even get me to the local shops unless I get a longer extension lead.

    Nobody gives a shit.

On the fast chargers: you are paying for the convenience. I've had an EV for 4 years. I reckon I've used a fast charger 5 or 6 times. 95%+ of my miles are from home charging. But if I have to do two long drives in a day or so, I do use the fast chargers. But it's a bit like motorway petrol stations: they are necessary sometimes. I can plug my car in to a fast charger, go and grab a coffee or take a piss and come back and I've got another 100+ miles in the tank. That does sometimes come in handy. Although I hand back my old EV next month and get a new one, which will do 150+ miles more on a charge anyway, so unless I am driving to Europe or something I really don't see why I'd ever use a public charger.

All of this is based on me having a home charger. I am no EV fanatic. A big chunk of the population won't have access to home charging, and for them, I have no doubt that EVs are significantly less convenient than ICE at the moment.

Ive not got much of an opinion on electric vehicles. One thing I do wonder about though, is Ive yet to hear about one running out of charge and blocking a road, or lane on a motorway?

I have a neighbor who has a Tesla and is a planner so does nearly all his miles by home charging. He loves the car (not the brand) and it works perfectly for him.

I had the misfortune to rent a brand new Volvo EV in Virginia about a year ago from Hertz. (I asked repeatedly for gas-powered vehicle but they claimed it was the only car they had left.) It was a week where I didn't know where I was going, was staying in different hotels and was unfamiliar with the state. The EV was an absolute pain in the arse. It kept running out of miles and diverting me off to locations miles out of my way to recharge. Plus the cost of recharging was never obvious until you were actually using the charger and it was sometimes 4 or 5 times higher than the domestic price of electricity. I spent 20 minutes with some Spanish people trying to explain how to use a charger for their rental too. In short, EVs currently aren't really viable in that circumstance because charging is literally the wild west.

Is there a pilot light on a gas powered car?

    Re: Electric Chargers

It reminds me of many years ago when a major car company here in China loaned me an EV.
It was their first venture into EVs and one of the first to come off their production line.
I had it for about 8 months and they wanted me and a few others to give them feedback on the cars.
The major problem at that time was public EV charging places were almost non-existent. Couldn't charge at home because most people, myself included, live in high-rise apartments.
The company gave me an app on my phone that supposedly showed where in the city the chargers were. However, the app was all in Chinese and difficult to navigate.
I'd often find myself stuck in traffic bumper-to-bumper, down less than 10% charge and without a clue where I was going to charge the car.
Finally, I'd find somewhere so far from my home that I'd have to get a taxi back!

Ive had an electric van for 15 months now, and a self charging hybrid car for 2 1/2 years. Definitely looking at a full electric car next time around. After the first couple of months when I didnt have a home charger Ive only used public charging a couple of times. The charging network is only going to get better and Ive been so impressed with the van, having swapped from a diesel.

It's bad for the environment, it's only just got warm surely if everyone had one it would get freezing in the UK and rain again. Stick with Diesel and let's warm Cardiff up, at least we will have some sun and warmth in League one

Sod the Spanish they can cook, they've had the better weather for years, it's our turn now.

Also, Trump says the turbines break after a few years, but they never rot and the scrap lasts a million years in landfills, so it must be true.

And they are a waste of money anyway, 40K plus most of them for a car that won't last ten years.

I wouldn't say that the charging network is only going to get better if it doesn't keep pace with the rate of increase in sales of EVs.

Welsh labour will probably have a target to have the best charging network in the UK by 2030 at a massive cost.

Then ban cars in 2031, you just know it.
