I'm not denying that. While I'm on the fence regarding Riza, and I know you've never wanted him in charge from the start, so our opinions will differ, our overall form under Riza should see us survive relatively comfortably. To lumber him with Bulut's start would be unfair. Riza was lucky to survive after that defeat to Oxford but, since then, we're 14th in the form table, that's with us throwing away too many points from winning positions. 4 wins is disappointing, but 4 defeats in 14 is more than reasonable.

I think the benefits are quite obvious.

That's 3-4 players who you don't need to pay a transfer fee for, leaving more money to strengthen the remining places.

academy players are almost always on a lower wage.

There's a chance that the academy players will kick on and really increase in value, giving another income stream from selling them on.


It's definitely a good approach to take for a club of our size.

Bringing through youngsters is hard though - there's a reason Warnock didn't want to bother with it. They are inconsistent, make errors, and you never know how much they're going to develop. From a manager's point of view there's a good chance they'll be sacked before you ever see the benefit of persisting with them. However from the club's point of view its definitely preferable to having a load of ageing players on large wages that you can't get rid of.

Most other clubs in the division are doing it to an extent - maybe 2-3 debuts per season, with 1 or 2 in time becoming embedded in the first team.

At the time of the article - and probably over the past decade - I don't think anybody thought the first team squad was capable of absorbing that percentage of academy players.

If the hierarchy at Cardiff feel this approach is the most profitable way to run/own the club and they're not fussed what league we end up playing in, then the lack of action to halt our nailed on relegation this season makes a bit more sense.

I just wish they'd be a bit more honest about it and have the bollox to tell the fans.
