Thread: Our Lee Gwan Squad

    Our Lee Gwan Squad

Any thoughts on what our squad might look like next year.

Contracts expiring: El Gazhi, Rambo, Goutas, Collins, Ralls, Meite, Rinimhota
I wouldn't be renewing any of them.

Manswerk and Alaves will be going back to their clubs.

Potentially, there may be interest in a handful of our players: Ng, O'Dowda, Salech, Robinson.

Other than that there are players that it would be nice to loan out/ get off the wage bill: Willock, Chambers, Turnball

Assuming all the above leave we have left:
    Hovarth, Alnwick Turner
    Bagan, Fish, Daland, Giles, Tusonda,Kpakio
    Robertson, Colwill x2 , King, Wintle (?)
Davies, Tanner, Ashford, Simic, Etete, Evans, Reindorf

I think sticking with younger players is the way to go, build some experience and continuity in case by some miracle we come back up we can avoid having to rebuild the entire squad.

Unless the rules change this summer we can have a outfield squad of 22 and at least 8 must be home grown but not necessarily by us plus an unlimited number of under 21 players. I suspect unless we offload some there will be a few not eligible to play

    Re: Our Lee Gwan Squad

I imagine one of our keepers, probably Horvarth, will move on; he won't want to be back-up in L1. Daland might be of the same mind (about himself, not Horvath). Can't see Evans staying on. I just hope we don't think that a few of the players who aren't up to much in the championship will be fine lower down.

We could have a few more youngsters coming through: Lawlor, Giles, Nyakuhwa.

Same. All of those out-of-contract players need to leave. No, we shouldn't be looking to give Ralls a one-year extension either.

No pace, no legs, that's been the trouble with our squad for years now.

no legs would seem to put us at a big disadvantage

Rallsy will be more than good enough for L1 as will Rino ( both pretty decent players who can cover various positions on the field )

Yak isnt on massive money and will frighten L1 defences, if we dont offer him a contract he will be heading to Reading ( if in L1 ) and you know he will bang them in and people will say " why didnt we offer hm a new contract, the clubs a joke "

even if we offer him a new contract I do you think he would take it, he'll probably go back to Reading where he's hugely popular and finish top scorer

    Re: Our Lee Gwan Squad

Rinomhota would be the only one I consider renewing.

Sell Horvath, Robinson, Daland, Turnbull, Willock and Ng for turnover.

Hold onto Salech, Robertson and Fish for dear life. Chambers also would be a great player to hold onto.

    Alnwick
    Kpakio-Fish-Bagan-Rinomhota
    Chambers
    Robertson-Colwill
    Ashford-Salech-O'Dowda

That's a solid starting 11 for League One, and get reinforcements in who can perform at that level. Poku from Peterbrough would be a decent addition on the wing for example, and we need more defence/midfielders, possibly a back-up keeper.

Believe me when I say even if Meite scores twenty five goals for Reading or any other League One clubs that aren’t Cardiff City next season i won’t be saying we should have kept him - he’s going to see out a two year contract with us without scoring a single goal at Cardiff City Stadium!

Can't edit my post now, but to add onto how I think we should manage it finance-wise.

I think we can get 3 mil for Robinson and Horvath easily, 2m for Ng, 3m for Turnbull, 1m for Willock and 2m for Daland, although we could give Daland another season. Between that and high-wage contracts expiring, that should be enough for us to mitigate the damage of relegation.

If we must sell Robertson, Salech or Fish, get at least double what we paid for them.

3m for Hovarth and 3m for Turnbull?

Horvath has twice won playoff finals in the Championship and Turnbull is a former Celtic player.

Expect a big turnaround in performances next weekend as out of contract players, with Championship ambitions, get a little desperate to impress other clubs.

I would not be surprised if we do something stupid like beat Norwich 4-0.

I think you need to be realistic. As much as wed all like to see decent fees coming in, the truth is most of the players being mentioned arent likely to attract big offers if any fees at all. Weve seen it before countless times, contracts running down, players being released, or moving on for free just to get them off the wage bill. Its not about being negative, just honest about where we are right now. Up shit creek.

Salech, Robertson and Fish must stay. Those are three players that I believe are paramount to the future success of this club and to lose them would be catastrophic.

Unfortunately, there is truth that there will be vultures low-balling us into accepting offers we wouldn't consider appropriate because we need them off the books. But I think between them, plus with contracts expiring to free up wage funds, we can keep Salech, Robertson and Fish. If they absolutely must go, they should go for at least double what we paid for them.

    Re: Our Lee Gwan Squad

I agree we have to release everyone out of contract. The only one I would consider would be Rino who has been decent at right back but also in midfield the last few games.

Im saying that midfield is already bloated and really we need fresh legs and ideas in that midfield.

I think we may have difficulty moving on Daland, Willock, Chambers and Turnbull.

Probably some interest in Salech, Robertson. Someone may take a point on Rubin Colwill thinking they can get more out of him.

I dont see a huge queue for anyone to be honest, especially as sadly we usually over pay on wages for very average players.

    Re: Our Lee Gwan Squad

We can't afford to sell Daland, he'll probably have to leave on loan.

I'd keep Ralls, everyone else can go that's out of contract. I'd lock Salech in Cardiff, I don't care about anyone else leaving. COD cares, so I'd like him to stay but he's not good enough for me to be heartbroken if he does go. If we can get anything for some of these useless tossers, we should. I would drive some of them to their next club like Chris Willock.

Why would you lock Salech in ? He can barely run and he's the slowest thing on 2 legs with the ball at his feet. He can go, too.

    Re: Our Lee Gwan Squad

I don't think there'll be a mass exodus or huge number of offers in the summer, what we may see is if we start well then there'll be plenty of January interest

If Salech stayed and scored, say, 10-15 goals by January then I think he'd be off for instance

Salech puts the ball in the back of the net. This is new to Cardiff City fans, I realise but this is a good thing for someone to do

    Good plan!

(Is there anything in the performances of Fish or Robertson in a Cardiff shirt that makes you think we could get a fee for them that is double what we paid?)

I agree we should keep all three (and Rino!) but apart from maybe Salach they havent done anything to boost their transfer value.

    Re: Our Lee Gwan Squad

Id let all the out of contract players go except maybe Rino although he may feel he can stay in the Championship.

Daland Chambers and Turnbull wont want to drop down a division so I wouldnt be shocked if any of them went out on loan, cant see anyone stumping up decent money for them. Not sure about Salech but we should do everything we can to keep him.

I could see offers coming in for Rubin, Robinson and ODowda and I reckon the club would almost certainly take them. I dont think anyone would be prepared to offer us what we paid for Robertson so I reckon he'll stay

I think the others are all stuck here. God knows what sort of players we could attract but we were desperately short of leadership and experience this season, so maybe a couple of seasoned campaigners at centre back and central midfield.

Rino has now been relegated with three teams; he seems to have more trouble staying in the championship than most.

    Re: Our Lee Gwan Squad

I wonder if Portsmouth would make a cheeky offer for Robertson?
After playing well for them on loan, in their League One promotion season, they really wanted to sign him permanently, but just didn't have the finances.

On the other hand, they might think to themselves that he has hardly been pulling up trees in the Championship this season.
