Is this common practice amongst clubs? Surely we should have someone internally who'd be able to draw up a shortlist.

We should, but we don't. That's been the issue. Far better to admit it and buy in help where it's needed. I actually think engaging someone to hire the manager for us is one of the best decisions that management could have made here

Looking at that Russell Slade must have have been the cheapest manager to keep us up.
