El Ghazi was not convinced from day one. Why would a player who was not yet 30 and was an effective Premier League performer not long ago sign for us, unless his standards had slipped quite substantially in the interim? Kudos for the moral stand he took at Mainz and I guess that had something to do with his decline, but the club would have surely let us know if we had beaten off a lot of good sided to get El Ghazi, but it sounded like hardly anyone else was in for him - a risky signing which turned out to be a very poor one.
Willock. The narrative from QPR was that he was not the player he had been two or three years earlier and he went on to prove that last season - one of a few players who I feel showed little or no sign that our relegation hurt them. A bad signing who I won’t be disappointed to see leaving us - he has the talent to be almost unplayable at this level, but I expect to see him struggle for a starting place if he stays.
Daland, got worse as the season went on. Needs to toughen up mentally and physically- still think he can succeed here, but, for now, he has to be judged as a really poor buy considering how much we paid for him.
Chambers, was really struggling at centreback for the first half of the season, but was a big influence from defensive midfielder in an improvement through the New Year and January before gradually becoming less influential in his new position. Ended the season with a daft red card and has to be viewed as another very poor buy when you consider how much were supposed to be paying him.
Kanga - the worst of a bad bunch.
Simic, utterly mad signing. It seems as though we bought him because it was reported Sunderland were after him and so we figured he couldn’t be bad. Showed some ability as a finisher for the under 21s, but did little else when given a few games for them after his disastrous loan at Kortrijk.
Robertson, wasn’t the player everyone hoped he would be and rather slipped away when the pressure came on in March and April, but worth persevering with and by the standards of our recruitment in 24/25, not a bad signing.
Fish, the mystery was why he was completely ignored in the first half of the season as he looked one of our better defenders when given a chance. That’s not to say he was outstanding for us or anything like that, but he was more reliable than most.
Salech, not the finished article by any means, but if the rest of our signings had made half the impact he did, we’d probably still be in the Championship - undoubtedly the best of our signings in the past year, but he’s not enough to avoid a 3 out of 10 marking for our recruitment department during that time.
